What is Home Schooling?
- When parents choose to educate their children at home instead
of a public or private school.
Why? - Some reasons include:
• dissatisfaction with educational options
• religious beliefs
• educational philosophies
• students not progressing within the
school structure
History of Home Schooling
• Began in the 1970s
• Three popular author and researchers
named John Holt, Dorothy, and Raymond
Moore wrote about educational reform
• Suggested homeschooling as an alternative
option for education
What are the Requirements?
• Legal requirements vary from state to state
in the U.S.
• Some have very few or no requirements at
all!
• Some ask for portfolio reviews or some
standardized tests
Pros and Cons
Being homeschooled in NOT for everyone

• Schedules are organized based on


whatever works best
• Homeschoolers have complete
freedom over the structure of the
school year
• students progress to their own
temperament and timetable

• Less daily interaction with large group of kids


within the same age group which means
children may lose social interaction with
peers.
• Learn broad range of subjects
• There is a possibility that there could be fewer
technology resources that public schools offer

• There is more family time spent on
homeschooling
• There is more educational freedom and
flexibility in homeschooling
• There is more money dedicated to education
