NON-ROUTINE QUESTION
Question 1

 Rajis and Rohan each began reading a Harry

Potter book today. If Rajis reads 9 pages each
day and and Rohan reads 7 pages each day. How
many pages will Rajis and Rohan reading when
both of them read the book for 4 days?

 To solve this non-routine question, we can use three

problems solving strategies. That is by using ‘making
a table’, ‘looking for pattern’ and ‘drawing a picture’.
Solution 1: Making a table
This is the step to solve this question by using ‘making a table’:

 Understand the problem.

We must know how many does Rajis and Rohan
read each day. The answer is Rajis 9 and Rohan 7.
We also must know that they read the same book
on the same day. The answer is yes.

 Devise a plan.
One way of solving this problem is to list out the
total of each person read per day in the first line of
the table.
 Carry out the plan.
To complete the table we must add the number
each of they read per day. After we add it, we
can find the answer for this question.
The solution for ‘making a table’ is,

Day Rajis’s page Rohan’s page

1 9 7
2 18 14
3 27 21
4 36 28
 The answer for this question is Rajis will read 36
pages in 4 days. Meanwhile, Rohan read 28
pages in 4 days.

Solution 2: Looking for pattern
This is the step to solve this question by using ‘looking for pattern’ :

 Understand the problem.

First of all, we must know that the number of page that
Rajis and Rohan read is 9 and 7 per day. Then, we must
know whether the number of page that they read is
constant or not.

 Devise a plan.
After that, we know that the number of pages that
they read is constant. Then we can make a strategy to
look for pattern. We consider that we must find
features that remain constant.
 Carry out plan.
We know the questions ask for how many Rajis and Rohan reads the pages
in 4 days. Thus, we add the number of Rajis and Rohan read the page in one
day and look the pattern to get the answer.

The solution for ‘looking for pattern’ is,

For Rajis,
9, 18, 27
Each new term is to be added 9 to its previous number. So, the next term is
36. Then we can see from the pattern that Rajis will read 36 pages in 4 days.

For Rohan,
7, 14, 21
Each new term is to be added 7 to its previous number. So, the next term is
28. Then we can see from the pattern that Rohan will read 28 pages in 4
days.
Solution 3: Drawing pictures or diagrams
This is the step to solve this question by using ‘drawing
pictures or diagrams’.

 Understand the problem.

In this question, it ask how many pages Rajis and Rohan read in 4 day.

 Devise a plan.
So, now we can use a problem solving strategies that is ‘drawing a
pictures or diagrams’. We can draw a rectangle as a paper.

 Carry out the plan.

 Then we can start to draw a rectangle and calculate it.

 The solution for ‘drawing pictures and diagrams’ is,
 We know that Rajis’s read 9 pages per day and Rohan’s read 7 pages per
day.
 So,Rajis’s
Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4

= Rajis will read 36 pages in 4 day

 So,Rohan’s
Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4

= Rohan will read 28 pages in 4 day

Conclusion
We have choose the solution of drawing
pictures or diagrams because it is more clear
and easy for us to understand it.
More than that, this solution interesting to
do because they are using drawing method
that can stimulate our mind to think more
creative in solving the problem.
Beside that, the step involved also is not
complicated and more simple than the other
two solution.
