INTRODUCTION
 Blindness refer to a loss of vision that cannot be corrected with glasses
or contact lenses.

 Types of Blindness
1. Partial blindness
2. Complete Blindness

 Causes for Blindness

• Glaucoma
• Macular Degeneration
• Cataracts
• Lazy eye
• Optic neuritis
• Retinitis Pigmentosa
• Tumors

HUMAN EYE
 The most important part of an eye that is responsible for vision is is
"RETINA".
 Two types of Light sensitive cells
 1. Rod Cells
 2. Cone Cells.

DISEASE OF EYE
1. RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA:
It is the group of inherited eye diseases.
It causes the breakdown of photoreceptor cells (cells in the retina that
detect light)

DISEASE OF EYE

2. AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION:

 Usually affects people above the age of 50

 It occurs mainly due to the breakdown of the cones in the retina

 Types of AMD: 1. Wet Form 2. Dry Form

BIONIC EYE
 BIONIC is derived from the words Bio+Elecronics.

 It is implanted behind the retina.

 Objective of bionic eye is to provide vision to those people who are

suffering from retinal diseases.
 Regions of implant

 Retina

 Optic Nerve

 Visual cortex

 Lateral geniculate body

METHODS OF BIONIC EYE IMPLANT
1. Artificial Silicon Retinal(ASR):
The brothers Alan Chow and Vincent Chow have developed a microchip
containing 3500 photo diodes, which detects light and converts it into electrical
impulses called ASR.
ASR is a silicon chip which is 2mm in diameter and 1/1000 inches in thickness.
ASR is a solid state biocompatible chip which contains an array of
photoreceptors and is implanted to replace the functionality of defective
photoreceptor cells.
Eliminates the need for wires, batteries or other secondary devices to supply
power.
Two approaches for ASR:
i) Epi-retinal approach ii) Sub-retinal approach

ADVANTAGES

 It provides vission to those suffering from eye diseases.

 Reduces the stress on the retina and antenna
 It helps to correct the vission
 No batteries are implanted within the body.
 Power required is less.

DISADVANTAGES

The Bionic eye cannot help the people who are blind
by birth.
Natural vision cannot be provided.
The small part is damaged it will lead to total
technique failure.
Very expensive.
