A PAPER PRESENTATION ON

STEALTH TECHNOLOGY
INTRODUTION:
Stealth is a technique in which we can
make any object invisible. Stealth is an
important technology which is used in military
operations. Stealth technology is also known
as LO technology (low observable
technology).
RADAR:

The term RADAR is common in

today’s everyday language. It is used
when referring to a technique of
recording the speed of a moving object.
The term Radar is an acronym made up
of the words radio detection and ranging.
• Electromagnetic energy of the frequency used for radar is
unaffected by darkness and also penetrates weather to some
degree, depending on frequency.

• It permits radar systems to determine the positions of ships,

planes, and land masses that are invisible to the naked eye
because of distance, darkness, or weather.

• The electronics principle on which radar operates is very

similar to the principle of sound-wave reflection.

• If you shout in the direction of a sound-reflecting object, you

will hear an echo.

• As you know the speed of sound in air is 340 m/s , you can
estimate the distance and direction of the object quite
accurately.

• The time required for a return echo can be roughly converted

to distance if the speed of sound is known.
Radar cross section (RCS) is a measure of how
detectable an object is with a radar. A larger RCS
indicates that an object is more easily detected.
STEALTH TECHNOLOGY:
The goal of stealth technology is to make an
airplane invisible to radar. There are two
different ways to create invisibility:
• The airplane can be shaped so that any radar
signals it reflects are reflected away from the
radar equipment.
• The airplane can be covered in materials that
absorb radar signals.

DESIGN DESIGN
Vehicle shape:
• The most efficient way to reflect radar waves
back to the emitting radar is with orthogonal
metal plates, forming a corner reflector
• Planform alignment is also often used in
stealth designs. Planform alignment involves
using a small number of surface orientations
in the shape of the structure.
Radar-absorbing material:
• A material's absorbency at a given frequency of
radar wave depends upon its composition.
• Nanostructural composite material, absorbing without
reflection radar wave. This new material is based on
nanotechnology. Carbon fiber composites Magnetic ferrite-
based substance RAM reduces the radar cross section making
the object appear smaller.
APPLICATIONS: F 22 Raptor
•B-2 Spirit.
•FGFA – Sukhoi
•AMCA – ADA/HAL
•F-35 lightning 2

Reduced cross section design:

•F 16 Fighting Falcon
•F/A 18 Hornet
•LCA Tejas PAK FA –
•Sukhoi Su-47 Sukhoi
•MIG 29 (HAL/sukhoi
corporation)
ADVANTAGES:
• In addition, because the stealth aircraft do not have to evade surface-
to-air missiles and anti-aircraft artillery over the target they can aim
more carefully and thus are more likely to hit the target and cause
less collateral damage.
• In many cases they are used to hit the high value targets early, before
other aircraft had the opportunity to degrade the opposing air
defense to the point where other aircraft had a good chance of
reaching those critical targets.

DISADVANTAGES:
• Stealth aircraft cannot fly as fast or is not maneuverable like
conventional aircraft.
• Another serious disadvantage with the stealth aircraft is the reduced
amount of payload it can carry.
• The biggest of all disadvantages that it faces is its sheer cost.
