Rational Numbers

A rational number is any number

that can be written in the form ,

Rational where a and b are integers, and
Numbers b ≠ 0.
A number in the form also
means a ÷ b, where a is the
numerator and b is the
denominator.

If a and b are both positive, is called a
proper fraction if a < b (e.g. ).
If a > b (e.g. ), then it is an improper
fraction.
Rational Since the set of rational numbers consists of
Numbers all the numbers that can be written as
common fractions, these numbers will
include all mixed numbers (e.g.2 and 5 )
and some numbers written as decimals (e.g.
0.71 and 2.333…)
Expressing Rational Numbers
from Fraction form to Decimal
form and Vice Versa
To convert a fraction to decimal, divide the
numerator by the denominator.
Fraction
form to A terminating decimal is the exact
representation of a fraction. That is, a
Decimal terminating decimal is the quotient obtained by
Form dividing the numerator of a fraction by the
denominator with a remainder of zero.

Sometimes, when changing a fraction to its

decimal form, the long division process will
never yield a remainder of 0 regardless how far
we carry out the division. That is called
repeating decimals.

1.Align the given decimals
according to their

Subtraction 2.Add or subtract the decimal
numbers just like whole

Note: Affix the decimal point.
In multiplying decimals, arrange
the decimal numbers in column.
Multiply the decimal numbers
just like multiplying whole

In dividing decimals:
1. Multiply both the divisor and the
dividend by the same multiple to
make the divisor a whole number.
Note: The multiple to be multiplied is
Division based on the last decimal place of the
divisor.
2. Divide just like in dividing whole
number and put the decimal point in
the quotient directly above the
decimal point in the dividend.
