Introduction
Health is the fundamental right of
each individual; the country has the
reponsibility for their health.
Better health is central to human
happiness and well being.
Health System
Concept of Health System:
 Health care is provided through health system.
 Health system consists of all those people and actions
whose primary purpose is to provide health services to
improve amd maintain health.
 It includes not only the government hospitals and
dipensaries, the doctors, nurses and other
professionals working in these organizations, but also
the philosophy of health care, funded, management
both formal and informal and all health activities.

Acc to WHO, health system in every country
comprise of all orgaizations, institutions & resources
to produce HEALTH ACTIONS
Health actions is defined as any effort, whether in
personal health care, public health services or
though inter-personal initiatives, whose primary
purpose is to promote, restore, maintain or improve
health.
A good health system provides quality services to all
people, when and where they need them.
Health system in india
Central Level
The official “organs” of health system
at the national consists of
1. Union Ministry of Health and family
welfare
2. The Directorate General of Health
Services &.
3. The Central council of Health &
family welfare.
Administrative staff
Taluka (Tehsils)
Assistant District Health and Family Welfare
officer(ADHO) (population of 5lak- 10lak).
Tehsils head quarters hospital have 40-60 beds
Medical Officer, Lady Medical Officer & Medical officer of
general hosp assist ADHO.
Hospital Provide basic & comprehensive emergency
obstetric & neonatal services.
These hosp gradually converted into CHC.
Community Level
Successful primary Health Care prog, effective referral
support is to be provided.
One CHC with a capacity of 30 beds referral unit for 4
PHC for every 80,000 (hilly/tribal/difficult areas) to
1,20,000 population.
Provides basic speciality services in general medicine,
pead, surgery, OBG.
Primary health centre level
Covers about 30,000 (20,000 in hilly, desert & difficult
terrains) or more popolation.
Referral unit for 6 sub centres.
Each PHC with a capacity of 4-6 beds manned by one
MO, two health assistants, & the health worker &
supporting staff.
Many rural dispensaries been upgraded to create PHC
Primary health care is provided through Govt
operated PHC’s at village & town levels.
Sub centre level
Most peripheral point between PHC & community.
Manned by one male & female multi purpose health
worker.
One sub centre for 5000 population.
The central council of health and family welfare in
1999 recommended, inter-alia, that at least one
physician from the Indian system of medicine &
homeopathy should be available in PHC

offered by the medical and allied health professions.
