SINGLE USE PLASTIC

EVS PROJECT
NAME : SACHIEL
CLASS – 5H
ROLL NO. 26

RESEARCH COUNTRY :
GERMANY
SUBTOPIC 1) WHEN AND BY WHOM WAS PLASTIC FIRST
INVENTED ? WHAT DO YOU UNDERSTAND BY SINGLE
USE PLASTIC ? GIVE EXAMPLES.

ANS) PLASTIC WAS FIRST INVENTED BY ALEXANDER

PARKES IN 1855, WHO NAMED HIS INVENTION
PARKESINE.

SINGLE USE PLASTIC ARE GOODS THAT ARE MADE UP OF

HARMFUL CHEMICALS WHICH CAN EVEN TAKE A LIFE
WHEN EATEN BY ANY CREATURE. THEY ARE MEANT
ONLY FOR ONE TIME USE. EXAMPLES OF SINGLE USE
PLASTIC ARE PLASTIC BOTTLES, STRAWS, PLASTIC
GROCERY BAGS, PLASTIC GLOVES, ETC.
SUBTOPIC 2) WHY IS PLASTIC SO POPULAR?
ANS) PLASTIC ARE VERY POPULAR BECAUSE-

1. DURABILITY: PLASTIC IS VERY DURABLE IN DIFFERENT

CONDITIONS, AGAINST PHYSICAL STRESS, TRANSPORTATION,
HANDLING AND STACKING LOAD.
2. BARRIER: IN VERY LESS COST, THE CONTENT CAN BE PROTECTED
AGAINST MANY EXTERNAL FACTORS THAT MIGHT AFFECT THE
PROPERTIES OF THE PACKAGED ITEM.
3. FLEXIBLE: DUE TO FLEXIBLE NATURE, THE PLASTIC CAN BE
MOULDED INTO ANY SHAPE. FROM A DISPOSABLE SPOON TO HDPE
BARRELS, THEY ARE ALL BROADLY CATEGORIZED AS PLASTIC ITEMS.
4. PRESERVATION: FOODS STAY FRESH LONGER WHEN PACKED IN
PLASTIC
SUBTOPIC 3) HOW LONG CAN PLASTIC LIVE BEFORE DECOMPOSING IN THE
ENVIRONMENT?
ANS) PLASTIC WASTE IS ONE OF MANY TYPES OF WASTES THAT TAKE TOO
LONG TO DECOMPOSE. NORMALLY, PLASTIC ITEMS TAKE UP TO 1000 YEARS
TO DECOMPOSE IN LANDFILLS. BUT PLASTIC BAGS WE USE IN OUR
EVERYDAY LIFE TAKE 10-20 YEARS TO DECOMPOSE, WHILE PLASTIC BOTTLES
TAKE 450 YEARS.

DAY 1 YEAR 30 YEAR 100 YEAR 250 YEAR 450

SUBTOPIC 4) As plastic has many valuable uses, we have
become addicted to single-use or disposable
plastic — with severe environmental
consequences. Explain how is plastic affecting:-

Ans) PLASTIC ARE AFFECTING VERY MUCH TO LIVES AND

ENVIRONMENT. IT AFFECTS-

(1)HUMAN

Use of plastic products leads to ingestion and/or inhalation of large amounts

of both microplastic particles and hundreds of toxic substances with known
or suspected carcinogenic, developmental, or endocrine-disrupting impacts
causing many lives to die each year.
(2) ANIMALS

Of the most devastating elements of this pollution

is that plastics takes thousands of years to decay.
As a result, fish and wildlife are becoming
intoxicated. Consequently the toxins from the
plastics have entered the food chain, threatening
human as well as animal health.

(3) ENVIRONMENT

It can take hundreds or even thousands of

years for plastic to break down so the
environmental damage is long-lasting.
Subtopic 5) How much plastic waste was generated/ produced per year in
recent past in India, Sweden, Germany, and United Kingdom? Compare the
data and find out which country has generated least amount of plastic.

Ans) Plastic waste generated by Sweden, Germany, India and United

kingdom are as follows-
Year/production Sweden Germany United Kingdoms India
2013 2.87 million tons 6.2 million tons 5.12 million tons 5.96 million tons
2017 2.12 million tons 5.68 million tons 4.9 million tons 5.6 million tons

According to this database Sweden has generated the least amount of plastic in
both 2013 and 2017.
SUBTOPIC 6) SUGGEST FIVE WAYS TO LIVE
WITH LESS PLASTIC.
ANS) WE CAN LIVE WITH LESS PLASTIC BY-
1. WHEN YOU GO TO SHOPPING, TAKE YOUR OWN JUTE
SHOPPING BAG.
2. PACK YOUR LUNCH IN REUSABLE STEEL CONTAINERS.
3. SAY NO TO DISPOSABLE STRAWS AND CUTLERY.
4. CARRY A REUSABLE WATER BOTTLE.
5. WE SHOULD SHARE THESE SUGGESTIONS WITH
EVERYONE SO THAT THEY BECOME AWARE.
SUBTOPIC 7) Find out 4-5 eco-friendly alternatives (with illustrations)
which can be
used in place of articles made of single use plastic, at home and also
promoted by leading business houses.

Ans) ECO FRIENDLY ALTERNATIVES ARE-

1. USE OF JUTE
E.g. Use of jute bag in place of plastic bags.

2. USE OF STEEL
E.g. Use of steel containers, bottles, lunch boxes, etc in place of plastic
containers.

3. USE OF BAMBOO AND WOOD

E.g. Use of wood and bamboo in household items like cleaning brushes, kitchen utensils and cutting board in place of
plastic cleaning brushes.

4. USE OF POTTERY AND OTHER CERAMICS

E.g. Use of pottery and other ceramics in food storage and tableware in place of plastic tableware.
SUBTOPIC 8) (i) Find out the reasons why so much plastic is not
recycled.
(ii) What are the
advantages of recycling plastic?
(iii) Suggest ways how you can contribute to increase
the recycling process of single use plastic.

Ans) (1) Only good quality plastics can go through the recycling process.
Recycling facilities are spread out unevenly, meaning that in some areas
recyclable plastics cannot be recycled because there is no machinery that
would allow for efficient selection and recycling.
(2) The process of recycling plastic helps waste management by saving
available space in landfills. Plastics disposed of in the trash take up a lot
of space and increase the amount of solid waste. Recycling a ton of
plastic can save 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space helping to reduce land
and water pollution.
(3) Enhance your city or town's core waste service by adding a recycling option at the
point of disposal in your parks, on your sidewalks, or at your transit stops. Simply
placing a recycling bin next to a landfill waste bin encourages constituents to properly
dispose of their recyclable waste, Use social media or a website dashboard to promote
recycling programs and increase participation; share valuable information with residents
and businesses about acceptable recyclable materials; and provide contact information
for who to call for public space waste questions or about delayed/missed pick ups, etc.
Subtopic 9) You can make a difference.
Spread awareness! Make a poster on SUP
with a catchy
slogan/ compose a poem or jingle.
Subtopic 10) Find out what the Government is doing against plastic waste
management at the local and national level in Germany.

Ans) German government against plastic waste are -

1. Avoiding unnecessary products and packaging.

2. Making packaging and other products more environmentally friendly.
3. More recycling, more recycling stations.
4. Preventing plastics from getting into organic waste.
5. International efforts to limit plastic waste at sea.
