Differentiate among the types of Electoral Systems in
the Commonwealth Caribbean ( CC )

To differentiate is to recognize the differences

The CC are former British colonies (ruled by Britain)
We must know the organizational/hierarchical structure of each
We must know examples of countries under each system

Britain was willing to grant some colonies Independence
for the following reasons:

1. The great depression of the 1930’s left the islands in a state of need.
This was due to the growing population, mass retrenchment, rising
unemployment, malnutrition and poor housing.
2. The islands were now more of an economic burden to Britain, as they
were expected to send money to the colonies to help alleviate these
problems.
3. The demand and price of sugar had fallen significantly and the
islands were no longer a source of great wealth for Britain.
Why have some remained
British colonies?

1. They felt they were too small, with limited power to

stand on their own against larger countries.
2. They possessed few natural resources to be able to
manage their economic affairs.
3. They felt that they would benefit more as citizens of
Britain than if they were independent or republics.
