Introduction
Modulus of elasticity of concrete is
defined as the ratio of stress applied on
the concrete to the respective strain
caused.
The accurate value of modulus of
elasticity of concrete can be determined
by conducting a laboratory test called
compression test on a cylindrical concrete
specimen.
Continued.
In the test, the deformation of the
specimen with respect to different load
variation is analyzed.
These observations produce Stress-Strain
Graph (Load-Deflection Graph) from
which the modulus of elasticity of
concrete is determined.
Apparatus
Testing
Machine
Compressometer
ASTM C469 Test Speeds
 Screw
Machine: 0.05 in/min (1.25
mm/min)
Hydraulic: 35psi/sec (24134 kpa/sec)
Test Specimen
Prior to performing ASTM C469 Tests:
Molded Cylindrical Specimen should be
tested within an hour after its removal
from curing or storage room
Continued.
Use specimens to determine the
compressive strength of the concrete
cylinder
Setting Up Compressometer
A device used in the compression test of
the concrete cylinder to determine its strain
and deformation characteristics.
The set up involves the following
procedures:
Continued.
The compressometer
consists of two frames(top
and bottom) as shown in
Figure.
The frames are initially
assembled by the help of
spacers.
The spacers are held in
position during the
assembling
Continued.
The pivot rod is kept on the screws which
are then locked in position
The tightening screws of the top and
bottom frames are kept in loose condition
Once the compressometer is arranged, it
is placed on the concrete specimen kept
on a level surface.
Continued.
The compressometer is centrally placed
on the specimen
Once the position is set, the screws are
tightened and the compressometer is held
on the specimen
Once the set up is done, the spacers can
be unscrewed and removed
Test Procedure
1. Keep the ambient temperature as steady
as possible throughout the test and attach
the strain-measuring equipment to the
specimen
2. Place the specimen on the lower platen
or bearing block of the testing machine
3. Align the axis of the specimen with the
of thrust of the spherically-seated upper
bearing block
Continued.
4. Load the specimen carefully to seat the
gauge and observe its performance. Any
abnormal response shall be corrected
5. After that, apply the load continuously
6. Record the applied load and longitudinal
strain when the longitudinal strain is 50
millionth, and the applied load is 40% of
the ultimate load
Continued.
6. Enter test parameters necessary to
calculate C469 Modulus and Poisson’s
Ratio
7. Result are posted to the right of the
graph

millionth, and the applied load is 40% of the
ultimate load
Step 7

Poisson’s Ratio
Step 8
Result are posted to the right of the graph
Calculation of Modulus of Elasticity
The
   modulus of elasticity of concrete is
computed to the nearest of 50000psi (344.74
Mpa) using the following equation:

Where, E= Modulus of Elasticity, psi

= Stress corresponding to 40% of ultimate load
= Stress corresponding to a longitudinal strain
of 50 millionths, psi
= longitudinal strain produced by stress
