children learn. Using art across the curriculum
increases student engagement. Art builds 21st
century readiness and develops the
4C's: Creativity, Critical Thinking,
Communication, and Collaboration skills.
Difference of ART and CREATIVITY

Creativity focuses on the process of forming

original ideas through exploration and discovery.

Art is the product of creativity.

Artistic ability includes skills and talent to create
fine works of art: painting, drawing, sculpting,
musical composition, etc. Creativity ability is the
skill and talent to use our imagination to create and
solve.
The Synergy Between Art and Literacy

1. Spatial Relations/Visual Literacy:

Art promotes print awareness and the ability to
differentiate scribbles, markings and shapes—as
well as directionality and position.
WHY IS VISUAL LITERACY
IMPORTANT?
• Visual Information is More Memorable
• Visual Information is Transferred Faster
• Helps Students Communicate with the World
Around Them
• Enriches Understanding
• Increases Enjoyment
WHAT FORMS OF VISUAL TEXT ARE
USED IN THE CLASSROOM?

Cave walls to computer screens and all points in between,

students are exposed to billboards, photographs, TV, video,
maps, memes, digital stories, video games, timelines, signs,
political cartoons, posters, flyers, newspapers, magazines,
Facebook, Instagram, movies, DVDs, and cell phones
wallpaper - to name but twenty! All these can serve as the
jumping off point for a lesson on visual literacy.
The Synergy Between Art and Literacy

2. Eye/Hand/Brain Coordination:
Art promotes the ability to interpret visual
information, alter that information and respond to a
continuous flow of new information being sent from
eye to hand to brain.
The Synergy Between Art and Literacy

Eye–hand coordination lies at the core of our daily

actions and interactions with objects and people
around us, and is central to understanding how the
brain creates internal models of the action space and
generates movement within it
Eye/Hand/Brain Coordination Activities

• Coloring activity
• Name Activity – dot painting
• Making beads bracelet
• Solving puzzle
• Playing ball catch

The Arts and Literacy: What Does it Mean to be

Arts Literate? (Barton, 2013)
The Synergy Between Art and Literacy

3. Verbal Creativity : It is an ability to think

creatively and to measure one’s fluency, flexibility
and originality of a verbal form. Creative
individuals are able to generate new possibilities or
more than one solution to a problem.
Is the new way on how we can cope and show some
effort by acknowledging ourselves as inventors,
creativity can measure through expressing great
effort (creative thinking). Verbal creativity is mainly
about being creative about language may it be
spoken or written.
The Synergy Between Art and Literacy

4. Visual Creativity : It is the ability to “break

imagined integrations of familiar patterns and create
novel and useful patterns”, which is considered
multifaceted and complex and plays a critical role in
many fields, such as art, painting and sculpture.
“Every child is special”
The main character in that
story especially is visually
creative, the way he sees,
perceives, process and
makes sense of the things
around him is to visually
create images in his mind
and other patterns he can
think
Torrance Test of Creative Thinking (TTCT)
Assess how creatively a child’s works and are often
given to children to determine advance placement
or as part of an entrance examination.
Children are scored on a number of aspects. This includes:
• Creative titles for pictures
• Expressions
• Imagery
• And Humor
The Torrance tests of Creative Thinking (TTCT) is
designed to identify and evaluate creative potential
using two tow parts- a Verbal test and a Figural
tests.

The Verbal test contains seven The Visual test has three subtests:
subtests: • Picture Construction (from a
• Asking marked cue)
• Guessing causes • Picture Completion (again with
• Guessing consequences cues)
• Product Improvement • And parallel Lines
• Unusual uses
• Unusual questions
The TTCT test is a series of figural exercises
(thinking with pictures) and verbal activities
(thinking with words) that students do to showcase
their creative abilities.

The test is used by both businesses and schools. Often, in a

school setting, a few of the exercises from the TTCT test are
chosen to be administered along with other intelligence or
achievement tests.
