2.3. EVALUATION
2.4. APPROACHES TO
ASSESSMENT
Acuña, Vanessa O.

Assessment
• The term assessment is derived from the Latin “assidere” which
means “to sit beside”. (Wiggins, 1993)
• Assessment is the process of gathering evidence of students’
performance over a period of time to determine learning and
mastery of skills.
• Assessment requires review of journal entries, written work,
presentation, research papers, essays, story written, test
results, etc.
Assessment
• The overall goal of assessment is to improve student learning
and provide students, parents and teachers with reliable
information regarding student progress and extent of
attainment of the expected learning outcomes.
• Assessment results show the more permanent learning and
clearer picture of the student’s.
Types of Assessment
Diagnostic Assessment
• A diagnostic assessment is a form of pre-assessment where
teachers can evaluate students’ strengths, weaknesses,
knowledge and skills before their instruction.
• With this form of assessment, teachers can plan meaningful
and efficient instruction and can provide students with an
individualized learning experience.
Formative Assessment
• Formative assessment is the monitoring that occurs throughout
the process of learning.
• It provides feedback and information during the instructional
process, while learning is taking place, and while learning is
occurring.
Formative Assessment
• The goal of formative assessment is to monitor student
learning to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by
instructors to improve their teaching and by students to
improve their learning.
Summative Assessment
• Assessment as learning is
associated with self assessment.
• As the term implies, assessment
by itself is already a form of
learning for the students.
Assessment AS Learning
• In assessment as learning,
students set their targets,
actively monitor and evaluate
their own learning in relation to
their set target.
