Why do we need oil and grease resistance?

• A key use of packaging is for food. Over time the control of oil and grease, water, and moisture (from
water vapour) is often needed

• Due to the hydrophilic properties of cellulose fibers, untreated paper and board is often not sufficient
for such high performance applications

• A modification is needed to make the food contact surfaces more lipophobic and more hydrophobic (oil
and water hating respectively)

• This can help protect both the inside packaged food contents and prevent water, oil or grease leakage
passing through the box - and prevent stains if the package is left standing somewhere for too long

• An added feature is that such treatment can strengthen the package to ensure integrity is maintained
against the oil and grease.

Wet end application advice - Important points to consider

Cartaguard KMP is cationic - it needs to be added at the right place / environment to provide the best
performance i.e. fixed onto the fibre
• It can be affected by process quality (water / pulp variations)
• Cartaguard KMP should be added far away from anionic additives therefore limiting potentially
negative interactions with other additives
• There may be a need to fine-tune the wet end conditions to achieve optimum performance
• Cartaguard KMP is cationic and will be self retaining with the anionic fibres
• Due to increased surface area, chemical demand dosage is higher than that of surface treatment
• Filler contents above 5% can impair performance because the KMP is lost from the fibres (So ash
levels above 5% can cause significant performance losses)
• Reduced performance can take place due to presence of ‘anionic trash’ due to a build up in a closed
water system, resulting in competition for fixative and fibre surface
• Cartaguard KMP is better for the creases and edges present in a box or carton over the traditional
surface treatment (size press) mode of addition.

Wet end application advice summary - Important points to consider (2)
Issue Why? How to solve issue Recommendation
Mineral fillers High filler content increases Remove it / minimize it
surface area
Low pH Normally not an issue for Check anionic trash level Add fixative?
performance: could be synonym Check Bacteria growth Add biocide?
of high disturbing substance
High pH Can interfere with retention & Remove soda or buffer Keep neutral pH
product more stable at neutral
pH – Reduced product charge
Contaminated High anionic trash will trap the The use of cationic fixatives will Pre-treatment with 1% Cartafix CB can
system product help to neutralize the trash help to reduce anionic trash
therefore leading to increased
Cartaguard KMP performance
Recycled fibers Increased fiber surface area, less Change to cleaner pulp (virgin) Cartafix CB for trash or move Cartaguard
/Waste Furnish anionic site available, quality or add fixative KMP addition to a size press application
variation, anionic trash if possible
All others wet end Competition for fixation or Add the Cartaguard KMP as a Check which additive is added before &
chemicals (sizing/ compatibility issue single component in the wet end after the KMP. Add KMP early into the
retention aids) process. Check interaction in the machine system (just after fixative when
lab it is necessary)
Basic product: Bad compatibility Remove it. Check why it is Cartaguard KMP is not sensitive to water
Ex: Chelating agent needed hardness
Anionic product: Bad compatibility Check why it is needed? Remove it or add it far away from the
Polyacrylate Cartaguard KMP (last component)

Cobb Test (Tappi T441)
The paper sample is pre-weighed and placed in the Cobb testing ring
100ml of water is poured into the Cobb ring
The paper is exposed to the water for 45 seconds followed by 15 seconds blotting (called “60 seconds
Cobb test (g/m2)”
The lower the value the better the Cobb performance

Hot corn oil test g/m2
• Using a standard Cobb ring, 80g hot corn oil at 120°C is poured into the Cobb ring containing
the test specimen. The corn oil is then removed after 10min and the excess blotted off
• The result is expressed as g/m2 corn oil absorbed into the paper
• Blue dye is used to allow the easy observation of staining
• Again, the lower the number the better the hot corn oil performance

• Test carried out at 60°C. All test solutions placed on test specimen and then placed in an oven.
After 5minutes the solutions are removed and staining is observed
• The higher the number equals higher grease resistance
• 11 is the most aggressive test solution
