identify the different types of tests;
determine the purpose of the different types of tests;
and
distinguish the effectiveness of the different types of
tests.

1. Diagnostic Tests
 These tests are used o diagnose how much you know and
what you know.
2. Placement Tests
 These tests are used to place students in the appropriate
class or level.
3. Progress or Achievement Tests
 Achievement or progress tests measure the students’
improvement in relation to their syllabus.
 Short-term and long-term
4. Proficiency Tests
 These tests check learner levels in relation to general
standards.
5. Internal Tests
 These tests are those given by the institution where the
learner is taking the course.
6. External Tests
 These tests are those given by an outside body.
7. Objective Tests
 These tests are those that have clear right or wrong
answers.
 Multiple choice, matching type, true or false items
8. Subjective Tests
 Subjective tests require the marker or examiner to make a
subjective judgment regarding the marks deserved.
 Essay questions and oral examinations
9. Combination Tests
 Many tests are a combination of objective and subjective
styles.

 It is designed to discover whether a student has a talent
or basic ability for learning a new lesson or not.

These tests take place after the learning has been
completed and provides information and feedback that

These tests are used throughout the school year often
to check whether students have mastered a unit of
instruction.
