The Theory of Evolution

Fact or myth?
What is Evolution?
Evolution is the theory that postulates that the various types of plants,
animals, and other living things on Earth have their origin in other
preexisting types and that the distinguishable differences are due to
modifications in successive generations.

Biological Evolution says that all living organisms that exists at present
are descendents of common ancestors that existed in the distant past.
It claims that we are descendents of ape-like ancestors that in turn
came from still more primitive ancestors.
How Evolution mainly occurs according to
the evolution theory?
• Natural selection
• Mutation
• Genetic drift
Does random mutations really lead to evolution?
a case study for proteins
• There are 20 amino acids that forms a
protein chain. Many proteins have about
150 amino acids.
• How likely is it to get a meaningful protein
chain by mutation?
• Each slot in a protein molecule has 20
possible amino acids to fit in
• For an amino acid chain of 150 molecules,
the possible number of combinations is
20^150. That is a very huge number!
• The ratio of functional proteins to non
functional ones is 1 to 10^74
Are the species that are supposed to take part
in evolution really in chronological order?
