INTRODUCTION

• Sheet Metal is a type of material that is flattened into thin sheets. Sheet
metal is made by taking a large cast in and rolling it into a long ribbon of the
thickness it wants. This flat metal is rolled into a coil and sent directly or cut
the metal into sheets before being sent to a machine shop.
• The sheets are made from different kinds of metals such as aluminum, brass,
copper, steel, tin, nickel and titanium. The sheets thickness depends on the
material needed for a project. Thicknesses can vary from 0.15 -6.00 mm
significantly; extremely thin sheets are considered foil or leaf, and pieces
thicker than 6 mm (0.25 in) are considered plate steel or “structural steel.
• Designing the products with the sheet metal comes with its limitations but
has many benefits that can work with this design material that outweighs
cons. It is available with numerous coating for corrosion resistance or
surface finish
• Sheet Metal can be useful for large and durable parts with few
features. They make good RF shields, ground planes and thicker gauge
parts for adding strength and weight to the things. Sheet metal is not
suitable for minimal parts, complex or precise geometry, cosmetic
parts or lightweight parts.
• Most of the metal fabrication businesses rely on 2D drawings even
though the 3D model is available in the market. At the manufacturing
floor, drawings are utilized to develop production plans. The
purchasing department uses it for technical packages while other
departments like quality and marketing utilize drawings to develop
different publications. So this is where Sheet Metal Drafting comes
into role
ENGINEERING DESIGN PROCESS

The engineering design process is a series of steps that guides engineering

teams as we solve problems. The design process is iterative, meaning that we
repeat the steps as many times as needed, making improvements along the way
as we learn from failure and uncover new design possibilities to arrive at great
solutions.
DESIGN ENGINEERS WORK

Design engineers study, research and develop ideas for new products and the systems
used to make them. They also modify existing products or processes to increase
efficiency or improve performance. They work on almost every consumer product
imaginable for large-scale production, from telephones and medical equipment to
kitchen appliances and car engines.

Design engineers are not only concerned with making products that look good and are
easy and safe to use: they are also concerned with ensuring that the product can be
made cost-effectively and efficiently.
Design Engineers work with CAD software to create 3D model of the part, to
makes assemblies of two or more components, to do analysis on the part, to make
2D drawings of part for manufacturing etc.
There are many CAD software available in the market, some of them are:
• Autocad
• Solid-works
• Catia
• PTC Creo (Pro-E)
• Uni-graphics (NX)
• Solid edge
• Sketch Up
• Fusion 360
• ANSYS
• Master cam
DESIGN OF AN ELECTRICAL
ENCLOSURE

Design of an electrical enclosure contains:

• Printed circuit board(PCB)

• Switch Board

• Transformer
PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB):
A printed circuit board (PCB) mechanically supports and electrically connects electrical or
electronic components using conductive tracks, pads and other features etched from one or
more sheet layers of copper laminated onto and/or between sheet layers of a non-
conductive substrate. Components are generally soldered onto the PCB to both electrically
connect and mechanically fasten them to it.

SWITCHBOARD:
Switchboard is a large single panel, frame, or assembly of panels on which are mounted, on
the face, back, or both, switches, over-current and other protective devices, buses, and
usually instruments. The role of a switchboard is to allow the division of the current supplied
to the switchboard into smaller currents for further distribution and to provide switching,
current protection and (possibly) metering for those various currents. In general,
switchboards may distribute power to transformers, panel boards, control equipment, and,
ultimately, to individual system loads.

TRANSFORMER:
A transformer is an electrical apparatus designed to convert alternating current from one
voltage to another. It can be designed to "step up" or "step down" voltages and works on
the magnetic induction principle. A transformer has no moving parts and is a completely
static solid state device, which insures, under normal operating conditions, a long and
trouble-free life
