Why we use Punctuation Marks?
Why we use Punctuation Marks?
Punctuation is the system of sign or
Symbols given to a reader to show
How a sentence is constructed and ho it
Should be read
Basic types of Punctuation Marks
 Comma
 Question Mark
 Period
 Colon
 Quotation Mark
 Exclamation Point
 Apostrophe
Commas
• We need commas to separate
items in a list.
• She had a jam sandwich, a drink, a
jelly, and a chocolate bar for lunch.
Any other reason for
commas?

• We also use commas to separate

clauses in complex sentences.
• The boy was playing with a
football, which had been signed
by Wayne Rooney.
Why is a comma important?
• Commas,commas, and more commas.
• Commas help your reader figure out which words go together in a
sentence and which parts of your sentence are important.
• Using Commas incorrectly may confuse the reader, signal ignorance of
writing rules, or indicate carelessness.
Where we use comma?
• Use a comma after a dependent clause that starts a sentence.
Example: “when I went running, I saw a duck.”
• A dependent clause is a Grammatical unit that contains both
subject and verb but cannot stand on its own, Like
Example: “when I went running…”commas alwas follow these
clauses at the start of a sentence.”
Where do you put commas?
• Use a comma after the first independent clause when you link two
independent clauses with one of the following coordinating
conjunctions: Like and,but,for,or,so,yet.
• Example: I am going home, and I intend to stay there.
Do you use a comma before which?

• When it is nonrestrictive-when you could take the which clause out

and the meaning of the sentence would be unaltered-it takes a
comma before it. Otherwise it is not the words which and that
determine whether there is a comma; It is the restrictive or
nonrestrictive nature of the clauses they begin.
Serial Comma

• In English language punctuation , a serial comma or series comma

(also called an Oxford comma or a Harvard comma) is a comma
placed immediately before.
Comma Splice

• In English grammar , a comma splice or comma fault is the use

of a comma to join two independent clauses.
• Example: it is nearly half past five , we
What is the Oxford comma rule?
