GOOD MORNING!

FOUR TYPES OF
LISTENING
OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
1. familiarize themselves with the different types of
listening; and
2. determine the types of listening to use based on the
given situation.
Before we
proceed, let me
ask you a question.
How do you listen to
your teacher during
discussion?
Do you listen attentively?
Do you take down notes?
Do you eat while you listen?
Do you chat with others?
FOUR TYPES OF
LISTENING
* APPRECIATIVE
* EMPHATIC
* COMPREHENSIVE/
ACTIVE
* CRITICAL/ ANALYTICAL
Appreciative Listening
- listening for pleasure and enjoyment.
For example, when we are listening to
music, to a comedy routine, or to an
entertaining speech.
Some common types of appreciative
listening can be found on sermons
from places of worship, from a
motivational speech by people we
respect or even from a standup
comedian who makes us laugh.
Emphatic Listening
- listening to provide emotional support for
the speaker. For example when you listen to
your friend telling you his problems.
- this type of listening focuses on
understanding and identifying a person’s
situation, feelings, or motives.
Comprehensive or Active
Listening
- listening to understand the message of a
speaker. The best example for this type of
listening is when you listen to your teacher
discuss the lesson. Another example is when you
listen to news or listen to directions for finding
a friend’s house.
- this type of listening focuses on
accurately understanding the meaning of
the speaker’s words while simultaneously
interpreting non-verbal cues such as
facial expressions, gestures, posture, and
vocal quality.
Critical/Analytical Listening
- listening to evaluate a message for
purposes of accepting or rejecting it. For
example, when you listen to a campaign
speech of a political candidate.
- this type of listening focuses on
evaluating whether a message is logical
and reasonable.

- uses critical thinking skills
