is one of the larger ports in Gujarat. The city was a major
trading port in ancient times too.

• Adi Shankara was initiated into sanyas at Omkareshwar, on the banks of the Narmada. Besides the Omkareshwar
Jyotirlinga temple, Maheshwar is another important temple along the Narmada.
• Every year, devotees perform the Narmada parikrama, a 2600-km yatra or pilgrimage from the source of the Narmada to
its mouth at the ocean, and back again.
• Some of the oldest cave paintings in the world – over 30,000 years old – are found at the Bhimbetka caves, near the
banks of the Narmada.

 Data collection from primary survey regarding the onsite activities along the river stretch
in Amarkantak. (specifically focused upon tourism pre and post pandemic for
comparison)

 Comparing the current situation with the research, data and secondary data of pre-
pandemic situation related to pollution levels

 Identification of issues and problems and impact of surrounding on the lake

 With the help of GIS tool of hydrology the river and its catchment can be observed and
compared along the years
 Through on site survey physical activities can be accurately marked as on what all activities are
happening and on which location they are taking place
 Taking in account the pre-pandancmic and post pandemic both situation can be analyzed to get
an overview of the current situation
 On the basis of that local administration can be contacted for further knowledge about these
activities and their plan of action to stop or make these activities less harmful.
 On the basis of the identified issues and possible reasons for ecological destruction, proposal
can be given for a sustainable approach towards the issues
 Since Amarkantak also holds a big significance for religious travelers, tourism would also be
taken in account along with the other reasons and problems for the river stretch in its source
city.
