Knockdown Effect
Carbon dioxide is nearly twice as heavy as air and is pressurized at 70 bars. When it is discharged on the fire, it
knocks down the flame. The reduction in oxygen help put out the fire. Carbon dioxide also creates a blanket
over the fire zone, not permitting oxygen into that area. Thereby carbon dioxide is rendered more effective.
3. Blanketing/Smothering Effect
• Carbon dioxide Is 2.5 times heavier than air, thus settles down
• Forms a blanket on the surface of fuel
• Seals off oxygen supply
• Creates blanketing effect on fire
• Reduces the concentration of oxygen
• Suffocates fire
• Causes smothering of fire
3. Blanketing/Smothering Effect
Carbon dioxide is almost twice the weight of air. This way, it gets settled at the bottom of air and forms the blanket
on surface of fuel and seal off oxygen supply, causing a blanketing effect to stop fire.
As more gas is added to carbon dioxide, its concentration increases, which in turn reduces the concentration of
oxygen. Increased concentration of carbon dioxide makes it heavier, thereby increasing thrust on fire surface.
Carbon dioxide displaces oxygen. As oxygen supply to the fire is stopped, fire suffocates and is extinguished. This is
called smothering effect of carbon dioxide. This also ensures displacement of oxygen from that area.
Precautions
As Carbon dioxide that is stored inside the extinguishers is at a high pressure of 70bars approximately
• Do not come in its way when it is being propelled at fire.
• Hold the extinguisher properly while using.
• Do not use it in enclosed area with human presence.
• Evacuate before releasing the gas.
• CO2 is not very effective on class A fires.
