HEAT EXCHANGER,

HEATER, AND COOLER

KENNETH M. SORIANO, EIT, AMIChemE

Adding a Feed Stream
COOLER/HEATER
• The Cooler and Heater operations are one-sided heat exchangers. The
inlet stream is cooled (or heated) to the required outlet conditions,
and the energy stream absorbs (or provides) the enthalpy difference
between the two streams. These operations are useful when you are
interested only in how much energy is required to cool or heat a
process stream with a utility, but you are not interested in the
conditions of the utility itself.

• Note: The difference between the Cooler and Heater is the energy

balance sign convention.
COOLER/HEATER THEORY
Note: The Cooler and Heater use the same basic equation.

STEADY STATE OPERATION

• The primary difference between a cooler and a heater is the sign
convention. You specify the absolute energy flow of the utility stream,
and HYSYS then applies that value as follows:
COOLER/HEATER THEORY
•  For a Cooler, the enthalpy or heat flow of the energy stream is
subtracted from that of the inlet stream:

• For a Heater, the heat flow of the energy stream is added:
