DESCRIPTIVE PARAGRAPH
In a descriptive paragraph it is important to "show" what you are
trying to describe, not to "tell" it.
For example:
One could say:
1. The soldier had a bandaged arm.
OR
2. The soldier was fighting in a fierce battle near the border. There were
few of his fellow fighters left. His captain, who had led the troop into the
battle, was lying next to him, with blood leaking from a gaping wound in
his stomach. The captain gurgled a few words, "Tom, you are in charge.
Take the remaining troops and go back to base." Tom turned to call the
order of retreat, and as he turned he felt a sharp, searing pain in his arm.
He looked down and saw where the bullet had hit. He was wounded, but
it was up to him to take the troops back. He shouted the order and, as if
they were one, they all turned and fled back to base. As Tom got through
the gates, he felt his head spin and he fell on the ground. When he woke
up, his arm was bandaged, but he was happy that he was still alive.
