INTRODUCTION
 Humans use up more resources than what the planet can renew in a year.
 India faces a unique challenge of poverty eradication along with sustainable
development.

 Sustainable consumption and production is about promoting resource and energy

efficiency, sustainable infrastructure, and providing access to basic services, green and
decent jobs and a better quality of life for all.

 Sustainable consumption is about consuming better.

 Key areas: Efficient management of natural resources like land, water, and air;
limiting the generation of toxic waste and pollutants and their safe disposal; and
adoption of sustainable consumption practices in public as well as private spheres.
Implementation of 10 Year Framework of Programme
 Sustainable Public Procurement
 Sustainable Buildings and Construction
 Sustainable Tourism (including ecotourism)
 Sustainable Food Systems
 Consumer Information
 Sustainable Lifestyles and Education

Critical Strategies incorporated by the Government

 Natural Resource Management and Food systems
 Resource Efficiency
 Sustainable Construction and Buildings
 Public Procurement
 Sustainable Tourism
 Renewable Energy Development Policies
 Standards, Certifications and Eco-Labeling
 Policies and Rules to limit or Ban use of Hazardous Material
Objective of the 10YFP :
 Support regional and national policies and initiatives to accelerate the shift towards SCP
while creating new job/market opportunities and contributing to poverty eradication
and social development.

 Mainstream SCP into sustainable development policies, programmes and strategies, as

appropriate, including into poverty reduction strategies.

 Enable all stakeholders to share information and knowledge on SCP tools, initiatives
and best practices, raising awareness and enhancing cooperation and development of
new partnerships – including public-private partnerships.
SDG AND SOCIAL BUSINESS

 Social Business as defined by the Nobel peace prize laureate professor Muhammad
Yunus is “a business which is created and designed to address social problem and is a
non-loss and non-dividend company”.
 As we know there are there are 17 SDG’s and no less than 169 associated targets. So
achieving these targets can be challenging and will require the efforts of government
business and third sector actors. However social enterprises also have a potentially
crucial role to play in achievement of these global objectives.
 In a survey conducted by RAUN on 30 Social Businesses from different parts of the
world. A majority of them (22/30) cover " Sustainable Consumption and Production" as
one of their goals.
 A possible explanation for this can be that SCP is at the core of the social business
model.
SOCIAL BUSINESS IDEA

•Business Idea: PRODUCTION OF INCENSE STICKS USING FLOWERS OFFERED IN TEMPLES

•SDG Goal: SUSTAINABLE TOURISM (WASTE MANAGEMENT)
•Place : VARANASI , U.P.

A Brief about the Business :

Sustainable tourism is the form of tourism that meets the needs of tourists, the tourism industry, and host
communities today without compromising the ability of future generations. One of the major problems
associated with tourist places is the Waste Generation. Talking about places like Varanasi which is the religious
capital of the country, tourists are attracted from all over the world to visit and witness the beauty of this city.
But on the other hand these tourists arrival generate a hefty amount of waste in the city. The amount of flowers
offered in the Temples of Varanasi is huge and at the end they either thrown in the river or dumped
somewhere. That’s where our business idea was generated. The Plan is to collect these offered flowers from the
Temples and Ghats of Varanasi and use them to manufacture Incense Sticks which will be both eco friendly and
cheap.
