Interior Designing

Human Behavior & Design Sustainability

Human Behavior?
• How human behavior affects interior Space design?

Before starting any design we consider the following points:

• Needs

• Function of the space

• Social setup (eg. Difference between how the Social gathering takes place in
western countries and middle east or Asian countries)

• Physiological ( Predefined way of using depicting some part of the space some.

• Environmental ( Spaces in tropical areas having more humidity and spaces

located in Arid areas have difference ventilation setting)
Human Behavior can be studied by:

Psychological factors:

• Use of color in different culture decide the

over all aesthetic of space

• For example difference Use of color in Tibetan

culture and Middle East.

Traditional Chinese Middle Eastern

Environmental factors:

The environmental factor we talk here, is

about the internal setting of a space like
cafeteria, living room atrium etc.

In common language, we refer it as ambience.

So environment of interior space

depends on

• User groups : which age group

of people is using it.

• Setting places: Object location in

reference to built environment and
climatic condition

• Multiple Behavioral phenomena

concepts : eg. Anthropometrics decide
the size of furniture and door heights.
Comfort at Home factors:
Psychological Elements Impacts on:

• Identity
eg: The design should demonstrate the structure of religions, cites, families and neighborhoods.

• Privacy:
eg. Public and private spaces should be clearly defined by means of applicable well-defined
boundaries

• Functionality and Flexibility:

eq. Adopt the concept of one space that can reflect different social functions.

• Accessibility and Circulation

eg. Entrances should be clearly defined and furnished with adequate light.

• Outdoor And Open Spaces:

eg. Create visual harmony between the indoor spaces and outdoors spaces.

• Aesthetic Aspect:
eg. Maximize the use of natural lights in compatible balance with artificial light.
Consideration for health and Safety

• Make the floor slip-resistant, non-reflective light, glare-free and easy to clean.

• Solid core construction for interior spaces doors.

• Enhance the levels of lighting where it’s needed, it should also be easy to control and adjust.

• Enhance the implementation of safety practices with technical equipment such as intercom system
and security ,cameras with monitoring response service.

• Stairs should be in appropriate width, right steps dimension, strong handrails and adequate lighting.

• The appropriate distribution of appliances in accurate positions such as stoves and air conditioners.
• Install automatic smoke detector system.

• Choose comfortable and safe furniture with healthy design.

• Maximize the daylight availability through opening (windows - doors) dimensions, materials and
design.
Design for the Human Sustainability

Why do we need Sustainability?

• The goal of sustainability is to meet the needs of the present without

affecting the ability of future generations to meeting their needs.
Sustainable Environement :

• The sustainable environment can achieve by setting up economic

development norm, society development norms and enviormental
protection norms in reference to human built environment.
