NAIL
hard covering made of keratin that is at the end of our fingers and toes. The
nail, just like other parts of our body, plays an important role as well. Aside
from assisting in certain physical activities in daily life, it also protects our
fingers and toes. That is why it is necessary to take proper care of our nails
and to also know its parts.
PARTS OF THE NAIL
NAIL BED
It is the part where the nail plate is located. It is abundantly supplied with
blood vessels and nerves and has longitudinally ridged surface which is often
visible through the nail.
NAIL WALLS
These are the folds of the skin that overlaps the sides of the nail which hold
the nail in place. It also protects the nail plate edges.
NAIL PLATE
It is the hard part of the nail which is made of keratin protein.
LUNULA
It is the visible part of the matrix that is pearl-colored and shaped like a half-
moon.
MATRIX
It is the part of the nail that reproduces by creating new skin cells which
pushes out the old, dead skin cells to make nails. It is located directly below
the cuticle.
CUTICLE
It is the thin, outer covering of the nail that is removed during the manicuring
or pedicuring process.
FREE EDGE
– It is an extension of the nail plate that can be filed and shaped.
