DESIGN OF A COLD

STORAGE UNIT FOR

BANANA(LAKATAN)
INTRODUCTION

A cold storage system that is suitable for Banana(Lakatan) is designed

to prolong its storage and transport life with the use proper materials and
needed computation to attain its optimum requirement in a cold storage.
The unit will be painted white to minimize heat and plastic stips will be
installed in doorway to reduce air infiltration during loading and
unloading This storage system has a capacity of 10,000 kg of Banana.
Also, CoolBot will be used to control the humidity and temperature in the
unit.
TABLE OF ASSUMPTION
NORMAL AMBIENT TEMPERATURE 35 ˚C
RELATIVE HUMIDITY 60%

OPTIMUM TEMPERATURE 25 ˚C
RELATIVE HUMIDITY 90%

REQUIRED COOLING TIME FOR LAKATAN 6 HOURS

DIMENSION OF THE CRATE 0.6m x 0.4m x 0.485m
WEIGHT OF THE CRATE 1 KG

STORAGE DIMENSION 9m x 6m x 3m

DOORWAY FLOW FACTOR (DF) 1.1 (Cyclically operated doors with temperature differentials <11 ˚C

TIME TO OPEN AND CLOSE THE DOOR PER PASSAGE (ɵp) 15 SECONDS

TOTAL DAILY TIME DOOR IS OPEN (ɵo) 60 MINUTES

NUMBER OF WORKING HOURS PER DAY (ɵd) 8 HOURS
NUMBER OF TIMES OF DOOR PASSAGES ( P ) 40 PASSAGES (5 TIMES PER PERSONELL )
LIGHTING 50 LUMENS/M2
20 WATTS FLOURESCENT LAMP 4 BULBS WITH 4-5FT SPACING
REFRIGERATION AIR CONDITIONING CAPACITY 12 TONS
LIGHTING REQUIREMENT
◦   As stated in table 4 of PAES 217, the
recommended lighting requirement for cold Based on the Annex D of PAES 217:2002, 0.068
storage is 50 lumens/m2. 20 watts flouresent lamp is needed per square
meter

And since the floor area of the storage is 48m 2,

therefore the required light intensity will be :
45m2 x 0.068 =3.6 lamps

no. of bulb = 4 lamps

Stacking:

10 x 10 x 5 layers

Floor area:

As stated in PAES 417, the floor area shall be determined by calculating volume of containers (in this case,

crate) and dividing the volume with the maximum stacking height and adding area of aisles, therefore ;

Volume of the crate:

Given the dimensions of the plastic crates,
