Types and Properties of Triangles

This document defines and describes the different types of triangles: - Acute triangles have all three angles less than 90 degrees. - Obtuse triangles have one angle greater than 90 degrees. - Right triangles have one 90 degree angle. - Isosceles triangles have two equal sides. - Equilateral triangles have three equal sides and three equal angles. - Scalene triangles have three unequal sides. - Congruent triangles have the same size and shape. - Similar triangles have the same shape but may be a different size.

Triangles

• 3 sided polygon: a, b, c
• Has three angles: A, B, C
• Angles added together
will always equal 180°.
Acute Triangles

• A triangle in which all

three angles are less
than 90°.
Isosceles Triangles

• An isosceles triangle is
a triangle with (at
least) two equal sides.
Obtuse Triangles

• An obtuse triangle is a
triangle in which one
of the angles is
greater than 90°.
Right Triangles

• A right triangle is
triangle with an angle
of 90°.
• Will have a marked
angle as seen.
Scalene Triangles

• A triangle with three

unequal sides.
Equilateral Triangles

• An equilateral triangle
is a triangle with all
three sides of equal
length.
• Also as three equal
angles.
Congruent Triangles

• Congruent triangles
are triangles whose
corresponding angles
and sides are
congruent.
• They are exactly the
same size and shape.
Similar Triangles

• Similar triangles
have the same
shape and
corresponding
angles and sides.
• Note that the
smaller one is half of
the larger triangle
