4 Branches of Earth

Science
Jocelyn Locklear
The field of Earth Science can be broken into four
major areas of specialization:

1. Geology
2. Meteorology
3. Oceanography
4. Astronomy
{Geology 1st Branch of Earth Science}

● Geology is the science that studies the

Earth's physical structure and substances, the
history of rocks.
● Geologists study the materials, processes,
products, physical nature, and history of the
Earth.
● There are 18 volcanoes in the US with the
potential to erupt again, all of them in Alaska,
Hawaii and the West Coast states.
{Meteorology 2nd Branch of Earth Science}

● Meteorology is the science dealing with the {Insert Picture of Branch}

atmosphere and its phenomena, including
both weather and climate.
● Meteorology is the study of the Earth's
atmosphere and the variations in
temperature and moisture patterns that
produce different weather conditions.
● Meteorology is useful during forest fire
seasons.
{Oceanography 3rd Branch of Earth Science}

● Oceanography is the study of all aspects of

the ocean.
● Oceanography is the study of the physical,
chemical, and biological features of the
ocean, including the ocean's ancient history,
its current condition, and its future.
● Oceanographers believe that the ocean floors
are only about 200 million years old while the
continents are about 2-3 billion years old.
Astronomy 4th Branch of Earth Science}

● Astronomy is the study of everything in the

universe beyond Earth's atmosphere.
● Astronomy is a science that seeks to explain
everything that we observe in the Universe,
from the comets and planets in our own solar
system to distant galaxies to the echoes of
the Big Bang.
● There are more trees on Earth than stars in
the Milky Way.
