    General Zia-ul-Haq came to power in 1977 through a military coup. During his rule from 1977 to 1987, Zia instituted wide-ranging Islamization policies in Pakistan such as establishing sharia law, requiring Islamiat and Pakistan Studies as compulsory subjects, and promoting religious schools and Arabic learning.     • Zia passed broad-ranging legislation as part of Pakistan's


    Islamization, curbed civil liberties, and heightened press
    censorship. He also escalated Pakistan's atomic bomb project and
    instituted industrialization and deregulation, helping Pakistan's
    economy become the fastest-growing in South Asia. Averaged over
    Zia's rule, GDP growth was the highest in the country's history.
