INTRODUCTION:
• Born in Lahore, Son of Muhammad Sharif , founder of Ittefaq and Sharif Group.
• 12, 14 and 20th PM of Pakistan, also served as chief Minister
Of Pakistan.
• Studied at GCU and UOP
• 1990 First time PM, 1996 Second time PM
• 1999 ousted by Marital Law, went to Saudi Arabia in exile
• Participated in 2008 election , coalition with PPP
• 2013 again became PM
• 2018 supreme Court disqualified him from office
EARLY POLITICAL CAREER:
• Due to the Nationalization Nawaz entered into politics (Steel Plant)
• 1980 Ghulam Jilani khan promoted him to Finance Minister
• He convinced Zia to deregulate and privatized industries for economic..
• 1985 Jilani nominated him C.M of Punjab… “lion of Punjab”
• Maintain good relations with Army Generals
• 1988 election…IJI…RS 15 millions from ISI
• Gained majority in Punjab and became C.M
1990 ELECTION AND PRIME
MINISTER
• August 1990, Khan dismissed Bhutto‘s government using 8th amendment
• Oct 1990 Election PPP -45 of 217 and IJI-106
• Nawaz became P.M and Bhutto opposition leader
ECONOMIC POLICY
• Initiated policy based on privatization and economic liberalization
• Improved nations infrastructure
• His economic policies were based on:
° Fiscal conservatism, Supply- side economics and Religious conservatism
• Pakistan’s annual growth was almost 6%
INDUSTRIALIZATION AND
PRIVAIZATION
• Western style of capitalists Economics
• Unemployment can only be removed by privatization
• State- owned banks were privatized
• PIA , WAPDA….
• By 1993 almost 115 nationalized industries were privatized
• PPP stance

• Iran-Iraq war and Iraqi invasion of Kuwait
• strengthen relations with Iran
• Raised Kashmir issue…Wanted peaceful settlement of Afghanistan
• Tried to control drug and weapons at border
• PPP and MQM criticized Nawaz of its Punjab- Lahore centered policies

NUCLEAR STANCE
• Nuclear energy and weapons programme as its priority
• Policy of deliberate Nuclear ambiguity
• US, UN economic on Pakistan
• Wanted to use nuclear energy peacefully
• Formed “ Institute of Nuclear Engineering”
1993 CRISES, ELECTION
AND OPPOSITION LEADER
• 18th April 1993 Ishaq Khan used 58-2b to dismiss National Assembly
• 26th May 1993, Nawaz went to supreme Court and raise a challenge (10-1)
• July 1993, Nawaz and Khan resigned on the base of an agreement with Military
• 1993 election, PPP returned to Power , PPP-86 and PML-73
• Sharif and Murtaza joined hands to undermine Bhutto
• 1994-45 train march from Karachi to Peshawar
• 1996 death of Murtaza …PPP lost support in Sindh
• Feb 1997 Nawaz Sharif returned to power
