BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM
This is a form of tool which will stand
as one point of learning areas as
adequate for the development of
competencies starting from basic
education up to the second level of
which is renounced as High School. As
for 2015, wide grounding has been
made for the Philippine Education For
All which is known as EFA.
The Four Pillars of Education in
Jacques Delors’ Report to UNESCO was
one of the documents that influenced
the restructuring of the curriculum .
The third and fourth pillars, Learning
to Live Together and Learning To Be,
which emphasize using knowledge
gained to improved oneself and one’s
relationship with fellow human beings,
are especially relevant.
The emphasis on learning-to-learn skills
has long been a feature of the curriculum.
To further decongest the curriculum and to
provide more contact time for the tool
subjects, the restructured curriculum
emphasizes the enhanced teaching of the
four core subjects : Filipino, English,
Mathematics and Science. A fifth subject
called Makabayan, which is envisioned to be
a “laboratory of life” or practice
environment, integrated the other non-tool
subjects.
REVISED BASIC EDUCATION CURRICULUM
Is on with emphasis to rubrics /student
performance as basis of grading system .
Teachers are required to prepare their
syllabus based on the objectives of the
revised basic education curriculum.
All test items: table of specifications were
prepared and/or updated.
Demonstration teachings were conducted
for staff development during school level
workshop.
Department heads make periodic
observation of classes to monitor
the implementation of the RBEC.
Integration method, collaborative
teaching, peer teaching, team
teaching , motor activities, visual as
well as oral activities in classes
were noted and observed.
Mentoring is also being practiced.
According to Sec. of Education Raul
Roco, the 2002 BEC was based on a 16-
year study (starting In 1986).
Less than a year later (June 12, 2002),
a new curriculum (the Revised BEC) was
signed into law.
Implementation of RBEC was based on
Executive Order No. 46, which in turn
was based on the recommendations of the
Philippine Commission on Educational
Reforms (PCER), created on Dec. 7, 1998.
Featured of BEC/RBEC
-Greater emphasis on helping every learner
become a successful reader.
-Emphasis on interactive/collaborative
learning
approaches.
-Emphasis on the use of integrative learning
approaches.
-Teaching of values in all learning areas.
-Development of self- reliant and patriotic
citizens.
-Development of creative and critical thinking
REFLECTION
First, BEC is a tool that strengthen our
curriculum, focus more in developing the
learner’s knowledge, skill, habits and attitudes
with the guidance of a teacher. Second the
emphasis of the third and fourth pillars of
learning, enhanced teaching of four core
subjects : Filipino, English, Mathematics, and
Science , also the fifth subject is Makabayan
that talks our Philippines history and cultures
and lastly it has a same features on RBEC.
While RBEC is based with the
emphasis to rubrics that will give
us a remarks of fail/pass based
on their performance in entire
school year, teachers have their
outline of their discussion and a
table that align their objectives,
instructions and assessment.
