Reported Speech

When we want to tell other people

what someone said, we use Reported
Speech.
The President of Perú:
• “ I’ll raise the salary of all Peruvians as for
tomorrow.”

• What did the President of Perú say

• yesterday?
Reporting:
• He said he would raise the salary of all
Peruvians.

• *Notice the change from WILL into WOULD.

• Why? Because we asked: What DID he say

• yesterday?
• This means that when we report later and, thus
use the Introductory Verb (said) in the Past, we
need to make changes in the verb tense-( one
step into the past)-, and points of time (as for
tomorrow), compulsorily.

• The Introductory Verb can be: told us, declared,

informed us, asked, suggested, clarified…,etc.

• As you may have noticed, the inverted
commas (“ ”) disappear when you report

his/her exact words (you’re not quoting the
person’s words).

• When you report questions, you MUST keep
Affirmative (or Negative) Word Order, e.g.:

We use: >IF< when we don’t have a Wh-

• own?”

• What did Pearl ask?

• She asked if she hadn’t said she had a car of
