2x3 – 4x + 5 = 0 No The highest degree/exponent is 3.
7x2 – 6x + 1 = 0 Yes The highest degree/exponent is 2. It is also
written in standard form; ax2+bx+c=0.
5x + 3x + 2 = 0 No The highest degree/exponent is 1.
4x2 = 16 Yes The equation’s highest degree is 2. The value of
b is 0.
2x2 = 8x - 3 Yes The equation can be written as 2x2 – 8x + 3 = 0
which is the standard form.
Converting quadratic equations into standard form
Standard form: ax2 + bx + c = 0

1) Convert the equation x2 + 3x = -4

x2 + 3x = -4 Transpose -4 on the left side.

x2 + 3x + 4 = 0
Converting quadratic equations into standard form
Standard form: ax2 + bx + c = 0

2) Convert the equation x = -8 – 5x2

x + 8 = – 5x2 Transpose -8 on the left side.

5x2 + x + 8 = 0 Transpose -5x2 on the left side.
Converting quadratic equations into standard form
Standard form: ax2 + bx + c = 0

3) Convert the equation (x − 10)(x − 4) = 0

(x − 10)(x − 4) = 0 Use the foil method or multiply the terms.

x2 -4x -10x + 40 = 0 Combine like terms.
x2 -14x + 40 = 0
