lakes or streams.
Rearing, breeding and catching of fish in natural or man made environment is
known as “fishing”.
“Aquaculture is rearing and breeding of fish in artificial environment in fish
farms.”
It has become industry because of modern processing and preservation
techniques and of course worldwide large production and consumption.

MARIANE FISHING
It is also known as Saltish or Barkish water fishing. It is only practiced in sea,
ocean and along coastal area.
Arabian sea is the only source of marine fishing in Pakistan. our coast extend
1100km from India to Iran. The continental shelf is about 50270 sq.km. The
total maritime zone is over 30% includes some very productive areas with
rich fisheries.
In Pakistan, marine fishing is practiced in Arabian sea and adjacent coasts of
Makran and Sindh.
Gwadar in Balochistan and Karachi in Sindh is used for marine fishing in
Pakistan.

INLAND/FRESH WATER FISHING
A type of fishing which is practiced in fresh water sources such as rivers,
lakes/dhands, streams, dams, barrages, reservoirs, canals, channels, ponds etc.
The only major fresh water fish source is river Indus and its eastern tributaries in
Pakistan, which discharge 200 cubic km. water annually.
In Punjab, Sindh, Kashmir, Gilgit and KPK inland fishing is practiced while in
Balochistan commercial inland fishing is not practiced. (Why)
In Pakistan, following areas are famous for inland fishing.
 Indus river
 Jhelum river
 Chenab river

AQUACULTURE/FISH FARMS
Rearing and breeding of fish in man made farms, ponds, tanks, cages, baskets,
buckets is known as aquaculture. In Pakistan, farms and ponds are made along
major rivers, lakes, and Arabian sea. Fish farming along rivers is commonly
practiced here. Fish farms are found in Punjab 10,400, Sindh 49170, KPK 100
and Gilgit 50 but not found in Balochistan.(Why)
Farms can be rectangular, circular, or square shape made of cement, concrete,
metal, wood, or nylon to prevent waterlogging and constructed in plain flat well
drained surface where water is available in sufficient quantity.

STRUCTURE OF FISH FARM
Farms can be rectangular, circular, or square shape made of cement, concrete,
metal, wood, or nylon to prevent waterlogging.
They must be constructed in plain, flat, well drained surface where water is
available in sufficient quantity.
Farm base must be cemented or paved. Trees must be planted to provide
shade and oxygen to the fisheries. Their dried leaves also used as feed for fish.
Farm size vary from few Kanals to hundred hectares. Banks or embankments
must be constructed along cemented farms.

Ms. SHAMILA QAYYUM-M.phil -GEOGRAPHY

FISH FARMING PROCESS
After construction of fish farm in plain area, plenty of water is filled in tanks.
Baby fish from different species carried in different farms and they separated
when got the mature age.
Water must be hydrated through modern devices or plantation of trees. It
must be changed regularly. Feed must be provided twice a day or the fish
requirements. Medicines and vaccines must be provided to reduce the risk of
loss. Healthy feed must be given. Farmer must take care of breeding
requirements of fisheries in farm. After mature age(Fishes takes one year to
get matured) farmer can sale mature fish in market. Ideal weight is 2.5-3 kg.
for good profit.

GOVERNMENT EFFORTS TO
PROMOTE FISHING IN PAKISTAN
Fishing industry has flourished in Pakistan after the establishment of Fisheries

Development Board in 2007. The main objective is to promote aquaculture

specially shrimps farming, creation of jobs, training, investment and marketing of

export goods.

Pakistan ranks 28th among fishing nations in terms of production while 50th in

terms of exports. We earn only 6% from the export of fish products. In 2010, we

earn 266 million US dollars from the exports.

This sector provide only 1% jobs to the country’s labor and need further

development to create jobs.

WATER POLLUTION

Ms. SHAMILA QAYYUM-M.phil -GEOGRAPHY

OVER FISHING
When fish are caught faster than they can reproduce.

Ms. SHAMILA QAYYUM-M.phil -GEOGRAPHY

CUTTING/DEFORESTATION OF
MANGROVES
 Mangroves provide breeding ground, nutrients and litter for the
growth of fishes.

Ms. SHAMILA QAYYUM-M.phil -GEOGRAPHY

LACK OF FINANCIAL RESOURCES
We are deficient in financial resources. Lack of money is major
problem for the development of fishing sector.

Ms. SHAMILA QAYYUM-M.phil -GEOGRAPHY

SUSTAINABLE FISHING
 In Pakistan, fishing is done on old methods which damage the
ecosystem of rivers and sea. Cutting of mangroves is also another
cause of depleting important species from our water sources so
implementation of modern but environment friendly methods have
become a problem. Fisherman needs to aware about the use of legal
nets, avoid fishing during breeding season and avoid to use of
explosive material.

Ms. SHAMILA QAYYUM-M.phil -GEOGRAPHY

GOVERNMENT EFFORTS TO
PROMOTE FISHING IN PAKISTAN
Government has taken following steps to promote fishing in Pakistan:
 Introduction of new fishing tools/methods
 Development of export oriented goods such as canned fish, frozen fish,
salted dry canned fish which has high value in foreign market
 Weather forecast system
 Introduction of SONAR, LIDAR system
 Monitoring of deep sea fishing vessels
