A topical drug is applied onto skin to treat
various ailments.

NEOSPORIN
A topical medication used to treat infections on the skin
caused by small cuts, scrapes, or burns. Contains the
antibiotics Polymyxin B. Sulfate, neomycin sulfate, and
bacitracin zinc.
PREPARATION

Perform hand hygiene.

Check room for additional precautions.

Introduce yourself to the client.

Confirm the client’s identity.

Check the client’s record for any allergies.

Provide health teaching to the client.

The position of the client will depend on the skin area


where the medication is needed to be applied
CONTRAINDICATIONS

Aminoglycoside hypersensitivity, neomycin hypersensitivity,

polymyxin hypersensitivity.

Fungal infection, herpes infection, mycobacterial infection,


tuberculosis, varicella, viral infection.

Hearing impairment, renal failure, renal impairment.


CONTRAINDICATIONS
Geriatric.

Children, infants, neonates.

Diarrhea, pseudomembranous colitis.


Contact lenses.
Ophthalmic administration.
Pregnancy.
Breast-feeding.

Mild itching or rash.

Minor skin irritation upon applying the medicine.


ADMINISTRATION
Topical Route
Administration is done through a topical route or applying it to the skin.

Before using, wash your hands, clean and dry the affected area (applicati
is 1-3 times a day).
Apply in small amounts, no more than 0.20-0.25 grams, rub it
gently and wash your hands afterwards. (Do not use over large
areas, deep cuts, animal bite, serious burns or skin injuries.)

A bandage can also be used to cover the wound.

Spray
Shake the container thoroughly first before applying it directly with
only a small amount on the affected area.

A sterile bandage can be used to cover the


treatment.

Avoid applying and getting this medication in your eyes, mouth and
nose, if it happens, wipe it properly and rinse it with water
thoroughly.
