 A special session of UN General assembly at new York on the

environment was held in June, 1997 which is also known as Earth


Summit Plus Five.

 A week long special UN General Assembly session was supposed

to find out “How far the committed nations had gone from RIO”.

 Envoys from more than 170 countries participated.

 It was found that the Planet’s oceans, Forests and atmosphere are still

in trouble , and its population of poor people are still growing.

 Global Warming was still disappointed.

 India – Rich North is not providing enough money and technology to

help the poor south develop in ways least harmful to the


environment.

 Other third world countries sharply attacked western Nations for their

move to reopen contentious matters such as labor standards.

 Call to create World Environmental Court to solve International

Environmental Disputes.

 In the end the NEWYORK Conference concluded, “ We are deeply

concerned that overall trends are worse today than they were in
1992.”
