Activity 1: Module III

Instructions: Copy and paste picture of geologic processes that occur within
the Earth. Please provide a short description for each picture (minimum of 2
sentences) and put them in the correct category
Rapid changes to Earth’s surface Slow changes to Earth’s surface
• Hurricane
A hurricane is a type of storm called a tropical cyclone, which forms over tropical or
subtropical waters. Hurricanes form over the warm ocean water of the tropics.
• Glaciers
A glacier is a persistent body of dense ice that is constantly moving under its own weight. A
glacier forms where the accumulation of snow exceeds its ablation over many years, often
centuries.
• Erosion
Erosion is the action of surface processes that removes soil, rock, or dissolved material from one
location on the Earth's crust, and then transports it to another location. Most erosion is performed
by liquid water, wind, or ice (usually in the form of a glacier).
• Volcano
A volcano is an opening on the surface of a planet or moon that allows material warmer than its
surroundings to escape from its interior. When this material escapes, it causes an eruption.
• Fire
Fire is the product from a chemical reaction between oxygen in the atmosphere and some sort of
fuel. The combustion or burning, in which substances combine chemically with oxygen from the
air and typically give out bright light, heat, and smoke.
• Weathering
Weathering is the breaking down of rocks, soils, and minerals as well as wood and artificial
materials through contact with the Earth's atmosphere, water, and biological organisms. Once a
rock has been broken down, a process called erosion transports the bits of rock and minerals
away. Water, acids, salt, plants, animals, and changes in temperature are all agents
of weathering and erosion.
• Earthquake
An earthquake is the result of a sudden release of stored energy in the Earth's
crust that creates seismic waves. Earthquakes are accordingly measured with a
seismometer, commonly known as a seismograph.
• Landslide
A landslide is any geologic process in which gravity causes rock, soil, artificial fill or a
combination of the three to move down a slope. Several things can trigger landslides,
including the slow weathering of rocks as well as soil erosion, earthquakes and volcanic
activity.
