potato osmosis experiment ‘19
OBJECTIVES
OBJECTIVES
The objective of this experiment is to
investigate if OSMOSIS will occur best with a
boiled potato or a raw potato in water.
Hypothesis

group
The raw potato will show no change or effect of
OSMOSIS. As for the boiled potato, it will
show a change by absorbing the water and
displaying OSMOSIS.

procedure
1. Preparation of all the materials
needed for the experiment.
2. One potato was pre-boiled for the
experiment, while the other 2
potatoes, we left it as it is.
3. Using the cutter, we peeled off the
skin of the three potatoes, after
which, we made a cavity.
4. The potatoes were then placed in
the tray and we put a good The potato submerged in water.

observation
observation
• The raw potato with salt absorbed the water
in the container. The salt in the cavity has
water in it making the salt in the cavity
damp showing that OSMOSIS occurred.
• The boiled potato with salt did not absorb
the water in the container and the salt is the
same as it was before; no changes occurred.
• The raw potato without salt showed no
change at all.
conclusion
conclusion
• This experiment proved our hypothesis
wrong, but proved that OSMOSIS occurs in
a raw potato and not in a boiled potato.
• Potatoes are full of both water and starch,
and will gain water when immersed in
watery solutions. Conversely, they will lose
water when in concentrated solutions, such
as those containing a great deal of starch.
conclusion
conclusion
The concept of OSMOSIS is clearly demonstrated
by this experiment. Water molecules are observed to
have moved from the region where they are highly
concentrated to the region where they have a low
concentration through a semi-permeable membrane
in the cells of the potato.
From the experiment, it can be deduced that in
order for osmosis to take place there must be a semi-
permeable membrane that separates two regions
OSMOSIS can, therefore, be used to explain how
plant cells get water from the soil and the
transpiration process whereby plant cells lose
water into the atmosphere. When water is entering
a plant cell, its wall (a semi-permeable membrane)
prevents excess water from entering as this can
make it burst due to osmotic pressure.
