PRESENTATION ON CONNECTORS

INTRODUCTION
 CONNECTORS ARE U.S.B OR SLOTS ON THE BACK OR
FRONT SIDE FO THE CABINET OR COMPUTER OR
ANY OTHER ELECTRONIC DEVICE

 THESE ARE USED TO CONNECT ONE DEVICE TO

ANOTHER VIA WIRES

CONNECTORS

The part of a cable that plugs into a part or interface to connect

one device to another.
Most connectors are either male (containing one or more exposed
pins) or female(containing sockets in which the male
connector can be inserted).
A connector may be temporary, as for portable equipment, or
may be a permanent electrical joint between two wires or
devices.
There are hundreds of types of electrical connectors.

In computing, an electrical connector can also be known as

physical interface.

Connectors may refer to:-
 8P8C connectors

 D-subminiature connectors

 USB connectors

 Power connectors

 Radio frequency connectors

 Audio & Video connectors

 Plug and socket connectors

8P8C Connector
8P8C is short for "eight positions, eight
conductors", and so an 8P8C modular connector
(plug or jack).

 The 8P8C modular plugs and jacks look very similar to the plugs
and jacks used for FCC's registered jack RJ45 variants.

 It neither uses all eight conductors (but only two of them for
wires plus two for shorting a programming resistor) nor does it
fit into 8P8C.

 The connector is probably most famous for its use in Ethernet

and widely used on CAT5 cables.

D-subminiature connectors:-

 The D-subminiature electrical connector is commonly used for the

RS 232 serial port on modems and IBM compatible computers.

 The D-subminiature connector is used in many different

applications, for computers, telecommunications, and test and
measurement instruments.

 A few examples are monitors (MGA, CGA, EGA), the

Commodore 64, MSX, Apple II, Amiga and Atari joysticks and
mice, and game consoles such as Atari, Sega and Amiga.

USB Connector

 The Universal Serial Bus is a serial bus standard to interface devices, founded
in 1996. There are several types of USB connectors, and some have been added
as the specification has progressed.

 The most commonly used is the (male) series "A" plug on peripherals, when
the cable is fixed to the peripheral.

 If there is no cable fixed to the peripheral, the peripheral always needs to have a
USB "B" socket. In this case a USB "A" plug to a USB "B" plug cable would
be needed.

 USB "A" sockets are always used on the host PC and the USB "B" sockets on
the peripherals. It is a 4-pin connector, surrounded by a shield.

USB
CONNECTORS

 The Type A plug typically connects a cable to a desktop or laptop

computer. The end is a wide, flat rectangle.

 The Type B plug generally goes into a for larger, typically

stationary devices such as a printer or MIDI keyboard.

 Mini-USB and micro-USB is most often used to a portable device

such as a camera or digital audio player. The end looks like a wide
grin.

USB CONNECTORS

A USB system has an asymmetric design, consisting of a host, a multitude

of downstream USB ports, and multiple peripheral devices connected in a
tiered-star topology.

Additional USB hubs may be included in the tiers, allowing branching into
a tree structure, subject to a limit of 5 levels of tiers.

USB host may have multiple host controllers and each host controller may
provide one or more USB ports.

Up to 127 devices, including the hub devices, may be connected to a single

host controller

 This type of connector was designed to connect with mobile

devices. This one can be used without a computer and it can
be used with most mobiles.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF USB CONNECTORS

 This type is known as the host connector and it is also

sometimes referred to as the downstream connector.
 This is the one that you usually plug into the ports on
your computer’s USB port or into a USB hub. It's
usually rectangular in shape.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF USB CONNECTORS

This connector is mainly used for the different devices

that can be plugged into a port.
This one is also known as the upstream connector.
It is used to attaches directly to the end of a device
(that be a digital camera, a printer, a mouse or
keyboard, etc). A Type B connector is usually box
shaped.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF USB CONNECTORS

 This connector was designed when the "USB creators" found

out the original connector for USB 2.0 ports was too big for
certain devices such as a PDA or a cell phone.

 So, in the end, this one was created for those who wanted to
take advantage of the USB PC connectivity that is available
with these smaller devices

Power Connector

 A power connector is an electrical connector designed to

carry a significant amount of electrical power, usually as DC
or low-frequency AC.

 Some types of RF connector may also carry large amounts of

power, but are considered as a separate category.

 Connectors carrying small amounts of power are known as

signal connectors

DC Connector

 A DC connector is an electrical connector for supplying direct current

(DC) power. DC connectors are poorly standardized, compared to
domestic AC power plugs and sockets.

 DC plug is a common name used for one common type of cylindrical

two-conductor plug available in a range of sizes and used to power small
pieces of electronic equipment.

R.F CONNECTOR

An RF connector is an electrical connector designed to work

at radio frequencies in the multi-megahertz range.

LOVELY PROFESSIONAL UNIVERSITY

Radio Frequency Connector
 RF connectors are typically used with coaxial cables and
are designed to maintain the shielding that the coaxial
design offers.

 Mechanically they provide a fastening mechanism (

thread, bayonet, braces, push pull) and springs for a low
ohmic electric contact and allowing above 1000
reconnects and reducing the insertion force.

 Research activity in the area of radio-frequency (RF)

circuit design has surged in the last decade for
inexpensive, high data rate wireless transceivers.

• An optical fiber connector

terminates the end of an
optical fiber, and enables
quicker connection and
disconnection.

Audio and video connector

 Audio connectors and video connectors are electrical connectors for

carrying an audio signal or video signal, either in an analog or digital
format.

 Audio connectors are electrical connectors designed and used for

audio frequencies. They can be analogue or digital.

 Video connectors carry only video signals.

Plug and socket connectors:-

A male plug made by Amphenol

 Plug and socket connectors are usually made up of a male plug and a female
socket.

 Plugs generally have one or more pins or prongs that are inserted into openings
in the mating socket.

 The connection between the mating metal parts must be sufficiently tight to
make a good electrical connection and complete the circuit.
