What is Local Area Network or
LAN?
Local Area Network is a computer
network that interconnects computers within a
limited area such as a home, school,
computer laboratory, or office building,
using network media.

Using this Network we can use

peripheral connected to one computer
such as Printer to print files or documents
from other computer.

TECHNICAL TERMS
Hub - used as the central object on which computers and
other devices are connected.
Crimping - joining two pieces of metal (usually a wire and a
metal plate) by deforming one or both of them to hold the
other.
Cable - comprises two or more wires running side by side
and bonded, twisted, or braided together to form a single
assembly, the ends of which can be connected to two
devices.
Pin – piece of metal used to fasten two things together.

CABLE PATCHING
WHAT IS PATCH CABLE?

It’s a type of cable with connectors on both ends that are used to connect
an end device to something else like a power source. Similar with
Ethernet cables, there are fiber patch cable and Ethernet patch
cable, like LC fiber patch cable or Cat6 RJ45 patch cable. And patch
cables are often used for short distances in offices and wiring closets.

Process of creating cable used to create a network that

interconnects computers.
STRAIGHT-THROUGH, CROSSOVER, AND
ROLLOVER WIRING
When talking about cable pinouts we often get questions as to the
difference in Straight-through, Crossover, and Rollover wiring of cables and the
intended use for
each type of cable. These terms are referring to the way the cables are wired (which
pin on one end is connected to which pin on the other end).

• STRAIGHT-THROUGH
• CROSSOVER
• ROLLOVER WIRING
STRAIGHT-THROUGH WIRED CABLES
Straight-Through refers to cables that have the pin
assignments on each end of the cable. In
other words Pin 1 connector A goes to Pin 1 on
connector B, Pin 2 to Pin 2 ect. Straight-Through
wired cables are most commonly used to connect
a host to client. When we talk about cat5e
patch cables, the
Straight-Through wired cat5e patch cable is used
to connect computers, printers and other
network client devices to the router switch or hub
(the host device in this instance).

Unshielded Twisted-Pair (UTP)
Cable - most common cable used
in computer networking. Number
of twisted-pair wires are often
grouped together and enclosed in
a protective sheath to form a
cable.

Steps in LAN
Cabling
STRAIGHT CABLE
Usually use straight cable to connect different type of devices. This type of
cable will be used most of the time and can be used to:
1) Connect a computer to a switch/hub's normal port.
2) Connect a computer to a cable/DSL modem's LAN port.
3) Connect a router's WAN port to a cable/DSL modem's LAN port.
4) Connect a router's LAN port to a switch/hub's uplink port. (Normally used for
expanding network)
5) Connect two switches/hubs with one of the switch/hub using an uplink port and the other
one using normal port.
CROSSOVER WIRED CABLES/T568A-T568B
Crossover wired cables (commonly called crossover cables) are very
much like Straight-Through cables with the exception that TX and RX
lines are crossed (they are at opposite positions on either end of
the cable.
Using the 568-B standard you will see that Pin 1 on connector A
goes to Pin 3 on connector B. Pin 2 on connector A goes to Pin 6
on connector B ect. Crossover cables are most commonly used to
connect two hosts directly. Examples would be connecting a
computer directly to another computer, connecting a switch directly to
another switch, or connecting a router to a router.
CROSSOVER WIRED CABLES/T568A-T568B
CROSSOVER WIRED CABLES/T568A-T568B

Note: While in the past when connecting two host

devices directly a crossover cable was required. Now
days most devices have auto sensing technology that
detects the cable and device and crosses pairs when
needed.
CROSSOVER WIRED CABLES/T568A-T568B
Now days, LAN card has intelligence, so that
both cables can work

They have a feature on lots of switches and hubs

etc called "auto-mdix" or "auto mdi/mdix", that
is the new thing where it doesn’t matter what
kind of cable you use, it will just auto detect
the proper connection type no matter which
cable you use.
CROSSOVER WIRED CABLES/T568A-T568B
Sometimes you will use crossover cable, it's usually used
to connect same type of devices. A crossover cable can be
used to:

1) Connect two computers directly.

2) Connect a router's LAN port to a switch/hub's normal
port. (Normally used for expanding network)
3) Connect two switches/hubs by using normal port in
both switches/hubs.
ROLLOVER WIRED CABLES
Rollover wired cables most commonly called
rollover cables, have opposite Pin assignments on
each end of the cable or in other words it is
"rolled over". Pin 1 of connector A would be
connected to Pin 8 of connector
B. Pin 2 of connector A would be connected to Pin
7 of connector B and so on. Rollover cables,
sometimes referred to as Yost cables are most
commonly used to connect to a devices console
port to make programming changes to the device.
Unlike crossover and straight-wired cables,
rollover cables are not intended to carry data but
instead create an interface with the device.
