ILLUSTRATIVE PROBLEM NO. 1: AREA BY TRIANGLES

This sides of triangle ABC were measured as follows: AB = 129.26 m,

BC = 258.73 m, and AC = 211.25 m. Calculate the area in square
meters and in hectares.
a) 1ST Solution: (Using Hero's
Formula).

S = (1/2)(AB + BC + AC)
= (1/2)(129.26
+258.73+211.25)
= 299.62m

b) 2nd Solution: (By Applying the Cosine Law).

Note: Since the area of the triangle as computed by the two

solutions are equal, it can be safely assumed that both
solutions are correct.

ILLUSTRATIVE PROBLEM NO. 2: AREA BY TRIANGLES

A surveyor sets up a transit at P which is located in the middle

portion of a four – sided tract of land and reads directions and
measures distances, as given below, to the five corners. Find the
area of the tract, in square meters.

LINE BEARING DISTANCE

PA N 41⁰ 3O' W 410.52 m
PB N 38⁰ 10' E 532.18
PC S 70⁰ 20' E 450.75
PD S 60⁰ 15' W 590.08

Solution:
a)Calculating the angles about Station P:
Fig. 43-6. Tract divided into four triangles.

Fig. 43-6

APD = 41º30' + 38º10 ' = 79º40‘

BPC = 180º - (38º10' + 70º20') = CPD = 70º20' + 60º15' = 130º35'
71º30' DPA = 180º – (60º15' + 41º30')
=78º15'Illustrative Problems
