PROF. E.I. CHUKWURA
INTRODUCTION
• Solid waste refers to the range of garbage materials arising from animal and human
activities that are discarded as unwanted and useless.

• Solid waste management issue is the biggest challenge to the authorities of both small
and large cities’ in developing countries

• Developing countries are seriously facing the associated problems in collection,

transportation and disposal of communal solid waste. An improper solid waste
management system may contribute to a worsening environmental degradation of the
community
SOURCES OF SOLID WASTE
• Residential: Garbage from these places includes food wastes, plastics, paper, glass
and leather.

• Industrial: These industries produce solid waste in the form of housekeeping wastes,
food wastes, packaging, wastes, ashes, and demolition materials.

• Commercial: Wastes from these places includes; food wastes, paper, and glass.

• From agriculture includes; spoiled food, pesticide containers and other harzadous
materials
DISPOSAL SYSTEMS OF SOLID WASTE
• Landfill: a site for the disposal of waste materials by burial

• Incineration: a disposal method in which solid organic wastes are subjected to

combustion so as to convert them into residue and gaseous products.

• Recycling: is a resource recovery practice that refers to the collection and reuse of
waste materials such as empty beverage containers.

• Pyrolysis: is often used to convert many types of domestic and industrial residues into
a recovered fuel.

EFFECTS OF POOR SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Litter Surroundings: While people clean their homes and places of work, they litter their
surroundings, which affect the environment and the community.

Impact on Human Health: Improper waste disposal can affect the health of the population
living nearby the polluted area or landfills.

Environmental Problems: When released to the environment, the solid wastes can cause
biological and physicochemical problems to the environment

Soil and Groundwater Pollution: Toxic materials and chemicals may seep into the soil and
pollute the groundwater
CONCLUSION

Solid waste is one of the important challenges to the environment. Population

increase, rapid urbanization, booming economy, and the rise in the standard of
living have greatly accelerated the rate, amount and quality of the municipal
solid waste generation. Therefore, care should be taken on the disposal of these
solid wastes to reduce the risk of pollution in the environment.
