Super Bowl Advertisement
As of 2019, the average cost to run a 30-second commercial during the Super Bowl was
$5.25 million. What does this number mean? Why is it in decimal form?

Look at the place value chart below and think about where
the digits would go.

Renaming Numbers - Place Value Chart
Let’s rename the following:
Let’s use a place
? value chart!
2.8 million = ones

Understand the question

2.8 millions is written with a decimal. I need to figure out how many ones make up 2.8 million.

Here is one way: since the value is in “million”, the ones digit should be in the
one millions place of the chart

Therefore, 2.8 million =

answer!
Renaming Numbers - Place Value Chart
Let’s rename the following: Let’s “dance with
decimals”!
2.8 million = ? ones

Here is another way: I need to re-write 2.8 million into ones. I know this number will be
greater than 2.8, so my decimal will move to the right.

There are 1,000,000 ones in 1 million. I know there are six 0s in 1,000,000. Therefore, I
will move the decimal spots 6 places to the right. Fill in missing spots with 0s.

Therefore, 2.8 million =

2.8 0 0 0 0 0 2,800,000

certain apps. Which app uses the most data on your

phone?

Understand the question

I need to figure out which app uses the most data. But they are all in different unit of measures
(bytes, kB, MB). I will need to write them all in the same unit of measure.
Solution 1 - Using a Place Value Chart
If the value is in bytes, the ones digit should be in the ones place of App Usage
the place value chart.
YouTube 204,765 bytes
If the value is in kB, the ones digit should be in the one thousands Instagram 1562.4 kB

If the value is in MB, the ones digit should be in the one millions
place of the chart.
