PERFORMING MENSURATION

AND CALCULATION
Computer System Servicing (NCII)
What is Mensuration?

 In the broadest sense, mensuration is all about the

process of measurement. Mensuration is based on
the use of algebraic equations and geometric
calculations to provide measurement data
regarding the width, depth and volume of a given
object or group of objects.
 Mensuration is often based on making use of
a model or base object that serves as the
standard for making the calculations. From
that point, advanced mathematics is
employed to project measurements of length,
width, and weight associated with like items.
Units and Measuring
 Different units can be used to measure the same quantities. It is important to use sensible
units. Some important units are listed below.
Task 1.1-1

 What would be the best units to use when measuring,

1. the distance between Butuan City and Davao City,
2. the length of a matchbox,
3. the mass of a person,
4. the mass of an elf truck,
5. the volume of medicine in a spoon,
6. the volume of water in a swimming pool?
Solution

1. Use km (or miles).

2. Use mm or cm.
3. Use kg.
4. Use tonnes
5. Use ml.
6. Use m3.
Task 1.1-2

1. How many mm are there in 3.72 m?

2. How many cm are there in 4.23 m?
3. How many m are there in 102.5 km?
4. How many kg are there in 4.32 tonnes?
Solutions
(1)
1 m = 1000 mm So,
3.72 m = 3.72 × 1000
= 3720 mm
(2)
1 m = 100 cm So,
4.23m = 4.23 × 100
= 423cm
(3)
1 km = 1000 m
(4)
So,
102.5 km= 102 5 × 1 tonne = 1000kg
1000 So,
= 102 500 m 4.32 km = 4.32 ×
1000
= 4320 kg
Task 1.1-3

What value does each arrow point to?

Solution

a) Here the marks are 0.1 units apart. So the arrow points to
12.6.

b) Here the marks are 0.2 units apart. So the arrow points to
11.8.

c) Here the marks are 0.4 units apart. So the arrow points to
6.8.
Bits, Bytes, and Storage
How can we relate to the terms Bits and Bytes?

• “This computer has a 64-bit processor

with 4 Gigabytes of RAM and 1
Terabytes of hard disk space”

• “My parents played Atari (8-bit) and I

play Nintendo (64-bit)”
Key Terms

• Bits
• Bytes
• Binary numbers
• All of the prefixes related to storage
– KB
– MB
– GB
– TB
Bi
1. bit = From a tshortening of the
words “binary digit”

2. the basic unit of information for

computers

3. 1 or 0 are the only values

Byte

1. Byte = 8 bits

2. Each keyboard character is stored as a

Byte

3. Example  A = 01000001

How does a computer processor understand
bytes????

The processor is
made of Billions
of Transistors.

Transistor on = 1
Transistor off =
• A transistor is a switch.
• Switch on = 1
• Switch off = 0

• The ”A” exists as a pattern in eight

transistors, where some are “turned on”
(charged) and others are not.
• Together these 8 transistors make up
one byte.

UNITS  Big & Way Big Bytes

• Byte a grouping of eight bits for instance --> 0110 0001

• Kb (kilobyte) about 1000 bytes

• Mb (megabyte) about one thousand Kb or one million bytes

• Gb (gigabyte) about one thousand Mb or one billion bytes

• Tb (terabyte) is about one thousand Gb or one trillion bytes

Terms for Storage Capacities

1 bit = 0 or 1 (b)
8 bits = 1 byte (B)
1 thousand bytes = kilobyte (KB)
1 million bytes = megabyte (MB)
1 billion bytes = gigabyte (GB)
1 trillion = terabyte (TB)
MB of data

GB of data
Terabytes = a trillion bytes
