WHAT IS THE STARLING ENGINE ?
The Stirling engine is a heat engine that operates by pressure and cyclic expansion of air or other
gas; the well-known working fluid; at temperature levels such that a deep conversion of heat
energy to mechanical energy occurs.

It is important to note that the Stirling engine is the only one capable of approximating the
theoretical maximum performance known as Carnot performance. For this reason as far as
thermal engine performance is concerned, it is the ideal option

This class of engines have a high efficiency, when compared to steam engines, and a wide ease
to be applied to any source that generates heat.

However, even though it has more power it is only used in some specialized applications.
FUNDAMENTALS
Two levels of temperature are used which causes there to be a net conversion of
thermal energy into mechanical energy (mechanical work).

The compressed gas exerts pressure on a piston. The piston is connected to a

crankshaft axis that allows to convert the linear movement of the piston inside
the cylinder into a rotational movement of an axis.
PRINCIPAL FUNCTION
• Works with cyclic compression and cyclic expansion of the working
fluid at different temperature levels

• It works through a cycle of compression and expansion of a gas.

• Works in a thermodynamically closed regenerative cycle

PARTS THAT COMPOSE
IT
1. Hot zone:
This is the part of the engine where heat is delivered, and,
therefore, will be subjected to high temperatures (around 800ºC)

2. Cold zone:
In this part, heat is extracted from the engine. Heat extraction
can be performed by free or forced convection

3.Regenerative:
It is a piece of material that can store heat while allowing air to
pass around it.
4. Piston:
This part is the one that performs the motor work and the one
connected to the movement transformation mechanism

5. Displacer:
This part is responsible for moving the air from one area to
another. This part must be able to generate a temperature
gradient between the hot zone and the cold zone.

6. The steering wheel:

This is the part that delivers in the emergency room to the cycle
so that the compression of the working fluid occurs and also helps
to keep the rotation of the engine stable.
CONCLUSION
We have learned the operation of the Stirling engine and the various
applications they can have, what it meant for the development of the
different combustion engines until reaching our present and the different
methods or use that were implemented thanks to the Stirling engine.
