 January 1, 1983 is considered the official birthday of the


Internet.
 Before this, the various computer networks did not have a
standard way to communicate with each other.
 A new communications protocol was established called
Transfer Control Protocol/Internetwork Protocol
(TCP/IP).

 The main purpose of the Internet is to provide global


access to data and communications.
 Use of the Internet and networking is essential for
advancing research in science, medicine, engineering and
design as well as in maintaining global defense and
surveillance.
Difference between Internet and Intranet

available to all whereas Intranet is a network of
computers designed for a certain group of users.
 Internet is a public network and Intranet is a private
network.
 Internet contains various source of information while
Intranet only contains group-specific information.
