ACKNOWLEDGE

• I would like to express my special thanks of gratitude to my teacher (Name of the

teacher) as well as our principal (Name of the principal)who gave me the golden
opportunity to do this wonderful project on the topic (Write the topic name), which also
helped me in doing a lot of Research and i came to know about so many new things I am
really thankful to them.
Secondly i would also like to thank my parents and friends who helped me a lot in
finalizing this project within the limited time frame.
INTRODUCTION

• Any real body which we encounter in daily life has afinite size. In dealing with the motion of
extended bodies (bodies of finite size) often the idealised model of a particle is inadequate.
• In this chapter we shall try to go beyond this inadequacy. We shall attempt to build an
understanding of the motion of extended bodies.
• An extended body, in the first place, is a system of particles. We shall begin with the consideration
of motion of the system as a whole.
• The center of mass of a system of particles will be a key concept here. We shall discuss the motion
of the centre of mass of a system of particles and usefulness of this concept in understanding the
motion of extended bodies.
CENTER OF MASS

The center of mass of a distribution of mass in

space is the unique point where

the weighted relative position of the distributed

mass sums to zero. This is the point to which a

force may be applied to cause a linear

acceleration without an angular acceleration.

Calculations in mechanics are often simplified when

formulated with respect to the center of mass. It is a

hypothetical point where the entire mass of an

object may be assumed to be concentrated to

visualize its motion. In other words, the center of

mass is the particle equivalent of a given object for

application of Newton's laws of motion.

HOW TO FIND THE
CENTER OF MASS

The center of mass can be calculated by taking the

masses you are trying to find the center of
Mass between and multiplying them by their
positions. Then, you add these together and divide

that by the sum of all the individual masses.
