WHAT ARE THE GENERAL GUIDELINES IN GRADING ESSAY
TESTS?

GRADING ESSAY TESTS CAN BE INFLUENCED BY EXTRANEOUS FACTORS, SUCH AS


LEARNERS HANDWRITING LEGIBILITY AND RATERS BIASES.

IMPORTANT: DEVISE TO ESSAY QUESTION PROMPTS AND GRADING SCHEME


PROCEDURES THAT WILL MINIMIZE THE THREATS TO VALIDITY AND RELIABILITY.
THE GENERAL GUIDELINES IN SCORING ESSAY TESTS:
1. IDENTIFY THE CRITERIA FOR RATING THE ESSAY.
2. DETERMINE THE TYPE OF RUBRIC TO USE

4. EVALUATE ESSAY ANONYMOUSLY
5. SCORE ONE ESSAY QUESTION AT A TIME
6. BE CONSCIOUS OF OWN BIASES WHEN EVALUATING A PAPER.

• THE STANDARDS FOR EVALUATING THE ESSAY SHOULD BE PREDETERMINED.


SOME OF THE CRITERIA THAT CAN BE USED INCLUDE CONTENT:
 ORGANIZATION/FORMAT
GRAMMAR PROFICIENCY
DEVELOPMENT AND SUPPORT
FOCUS AND DETAILS.
2. DETERMINE THE TYPE OF RUBRIC USE
THERE ARE TWO BASIC TYPE OF RUBRIC THE HOLISTIC AND ANALYTIC
SCORING SYSTEM.
 HOLISTIC RUBRIC- REQUIRE EVALUATING THE ESSAY AND TAKING INTO CONSIDERATION
ALL THE CRITERIA. ONLY A SINGLE SCORE IS GIVEN BASED ON THE OVERALL JUDGMENT OF
THE LEARNERS WRITING COMPOSITION. THIS RUBRIC VIEWED TO BE MORE CONVENIENT
FOR THE TEACHERS AS IT REQUIRES LESS AREA OR ASPECT OF WRITING TO EVALUATE.

 ANALYTIC RUBRIC – IS THE SYSTEM REQUIRES THAT THE ESSAY IS EVALUATED BASED ON
EACH OF THE CRITERIA.
3. PREPARE THE RUBRIC
• THE SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES RELATED TO ESSAY WRITING SHOULD FIRST BE
IDENTIFIED. THIS SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES REPRESENT THE CRITERIA.
PERFORMANCE BENCHMARKS AND POINT VALUES ARE DETERMINED.

•THE RATER/TEACHER SHOULD STICK TO THE CRITERIA INCLUDED
IN THE RUBRIC WHEN EVALUATING THE ESSAY.

BEFORE GIVING THE FINAL RATING.
•THIS IS IMPORTANT ESPECIALLY FOR ESSAYS THAT WERE
INITIALLY GIVEN A BARELY PASSING OR FAILING GRADE.
8. GET TWO OR MORE RATERS
•ESSAYS THAT ARE HIGH-STAKE, SUCH AS THOSE USED FOR
ADMISSION, PLACEMENT, OR SCHOLARSHIP SCREENING
PURPOSES.

9. WRITE COMMENTS
•NEXT TO THE LEARNERS RESPONSES TO PROVIDE FEEDBACK
ON HOW WELL ONE HAS PERFORMED IN THE ESSAY TEST.
WHAT IS THE NEW GRADING SYSTEM OF THE
PHILIPPINE K-12 PROGRAM?
• APRIL 1, 2015- DEPED THROUGH DO NO. 8, SERIES OF 2015 ANNOUNCED THE IMPLEMENTATION OF A NEW
GRADING SYSTEM FOR ALL GRADE LEVELS IN PUBLIC SCHOOLS FROM ELEMENTARY TO SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL.

• ALTHOUGH PRIVATE SCHOOLS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO IMPLEMENT THE SAME GUIDELINES, THEY ARE
ENCOURAGED TO FOLLOW THEM AND ARE PERMITTED TO MODIFY THEM IN ACCORDANCE TO THEIR
INSTITUTIONS PHILOSOPHY, VISION AND MISSION.

• GRADING SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED AS A STANDARD AND COMPETENCY-BASED GRADING SYSTEM, WHERE 60 IS


MINIMUM GRADE NEEDED TO PASS A SPECIFIC LEARNING AREA, WHICH IS TRANSMUTED TO 75 IN THE REPORT
CARD.

• GRADES WILL BE BASED ON THE WRS OF LEARNERS SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENTS BASED ON THE THREE
COMPONENTS: WRITTEN WORK, PERFORMANCE TASK AND QUARTERLY ASSESSMENT .

SCORE (WS) WS OF WW ENGLISH = 90.63 X 0.30= 27.19
WS OF PT ENGLISH = 83.33 X 0.50 = 41.67
WS OF ENGLISH QA = 80.00 X 0.20 = 16
ADD WEIGTHED SCORES FOR INITIAL GRADE FOR ENGLISH = 27.19 + 41.67 + 16.00= 84.86
THE INITIAL GRADE
TRANSMUTE INITIAL GRADE TO (USED TRANSMUTATION TABLE FROM DO NO. 8, S. 2015)
QUARTER GRADE FOR 84.86, TRANSMUTED GRADE IS 90, WHICH IS THE QG.
WEIGHTS FOR THREE (3) COMPONENTS FOR
GRADES 1-10 AND SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL.
