UTILIZATION OF

WASTE PLASTIC IN BITUMINOUS

MIXES FOR ROAD CONSTRUCTION

PRESENTED BY:

OBJECTIVES

 Optimization of bitumen content by addition of

plastics.

 Comparison of bitumen mix characteristics before

& after the addition of plastics.

 Study the benefits of using plastics as an additive.

INTRODUCTION

 WASTE PLASTICS-AS BINDER AND

MODIFIER:-

 Waste plastics on heating soften at around 130°C.

 The softened plastics have a binding property. Hence, the

molten plastics materials can be used as a binder and/or they
can be mixed with binder like bitumen to enhance their
binding property.

 This may serve as a good modifier for the bitumen, used for
road construction.
NEED FOR THE PROJECT
 Plastic is non-biodegradable.
 Disposal of waste plastic is a major problem.
 Burning of waste plastic causes environmental pollution.
 Plastic block drains and cause flooding in cities.
 Waste plastic can be used as a binder in bituminous road
construction when it is melted.
 A better and economic road with the use of waste plastic.
CONCEPT
 The Concept of Utilization of Waste Plastic in
Bituminous Mixes for Road Construction has been
done since 1997 in India.

 One such technology is called Bangalore’s KK

process.

 Bangalore-based firm, K K Poly-flex and a team of

chemical engineers from RV College of Engineering,
Bangalore, have developed a way of using plastic
waste for road construction
KK PROCESS
 An initial study was conducted in 1997 by the team to test
for strength and durability and further research was done by
transportation Dept of Bangalore university.

 In practice, such a “plastic road” laid in Bangalore (at the

Rajarajeshwari Junction) in March 2001.

 Showed superior smoothness and uniformity and less rutting.

 The process was also approved in 2003 by the Central Road

Research Institute, Delhi.

 This process got patent from Govt of India.

BASIC PROCESS
PROCESSING DETAILS

 Collection of waste plastic.

 Cleaning and shredding of waste plastic.

 Mixing of shredded waste plastic, aggregate and

bitumen in central mixing plant.

 Laying of bituminous mix.

COLLECTION OF WASTE PLASTIC
 Collected from roads, garbage trucks, compost
plants and by purchase from rag-pickers.
 CLEANING AND SHREDDING

CLEANING PROCESS SHREDDING PROCESS

waste plastic are sorted, cleaned plastic is cut into
de-dusted, cleaned if smaller size using
necessary. shredding machine.
 MIXING OF WASTE PLASTIC, AGGREGATE AND
BITUMEN IN CENTRAL MIXING PLANT:-
 The aggregate mix is heated to 1650c (as per the HRS
specification) in central mixing plant.
 Similarly 4.6%of bitumen to the weight of mix is to be
heated up to 160ºc separately.
 The 8% of waste plastic to the weight of bitumen are
added in the conveyor belt &heated bitumen is also
sprayed
LAYING OF BITUMINOUS MIX
 Theroad laying temperature is between 1100c to
1200c. The roller used is 8-ton capacity.
METHODOLOGIES
WASTE PLASTIC ROADS CONSTRUCTED

 The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)

has used plastic on about 600 km of roads,
including arterial roads.

 The
plastic model was successful on major roads in
Bangalore, including Shankar Mutt Road, K H
Road and other roads shown below.
The sign in front of Puttanna Chetty Town Hall
RAJARAJESWARI NAGAR ROAD
TV TOWER ROAD
MANIPAL TOWER ROAD
M G Road (towards Trinity Circle)
SOME OTHER ROAD
CONSTRUCTIONS…..
 The Engg. Dept. of the administration has constructed the
carriageway of 1.2 km out of a total length of 2.4 km for slow
moving traffic in Sector 27 in CHANDIGARH using 5%
waste plastic with bitumen.

 Field trials have also been carried out, using Dry process in
DELHI under which about 3.5km road stretch has recently
been constructed with 40mm bituminous concrete overlay on
the above said location. The section will be monitored for
another three years for its performance
CONTD….

 The Himachal Pradesh State Pollution Control Board in

collaboration with the Public Works Department (PWD) has
built three road stretches on a pilot basis by using shredded
plastic waste on the outskirts of SHIMLA.

 A trial was organized for mixing of Plastics Waste with

stones and bitumen in MCGM’s high speed Central Mixing
Plant at WORLI and to use the mixed aggregate for the
construction/ repair work of Tar Road.
