Blood Composition
- Humans have 5 liters of blood on their bodies
Plasma consists of water with chemicals
dissolved in it :
10 cm3
• Nutriens, such as glucose, amino
acids, lipids, vitaamins and mineral
Plasma-liquid part ions, e.g. sodium and chloride ions.
of blood
(55% of blood volume)
• Wastes, such as urea and carbon
dioxide.
5 cm3 White blood cells
and platelets • Blood proteins, such as albumen and
antibodies
Red blood cells
• Hormones, such as insulin, glucagon,
and adrenaline.
Blood Cells
There are three types of blood cell :
• Red blood cells, heve no nuclei.
lymphocite
Red blood They look red because they have the
cells
red pigment haemoglobin.
phagocyte
piatelets
• White blood cells, have nuclei.
- There are two main types:
phagocyte and lymphocyte
- They are colourless as they do not
have haemoglobin and do not
transport oxygen

• Platelets, are tiny fragments of

cells which cause blood to clot,
for example when you cut
yourself.
Red Blood Cells
- There are about 5 milion red blood cells in
every coubic millimetere of blood.
- There are made in the bone marrow.
- The function of red blood cells is to carry
oxygen.
- Red blood cells are disc-shaped with the
middle pushed in. They have a large
surface area compared with their volume
and this help them to absorb oxygen.

- The cytoplasm is full of

Cell
haemoglobin
haemoglobin. This is a special type
membrane
of protein that contains iron.
- As the cells have no nuclei this
Red blood cell makes more space for
haemoglobin.
oxyhaemoglobin
Look at the diagram

Explanation :
1. Oxygen diffuses from the alveoli
into the blood. The oxygen
attaches temporarily to the
haemoglobin in the red cells
1 making oxyhaemoglobin.

oxygen to the cells which need
it.
3. The oxygen leaves the
oxyhaemoglobin and diffuses
out of the blood to the cells. The
oxyhaemoglobin now just
haemoglobin again.
4. The red blood cells return to the
lungs for more oxygen.
