HISTORY OF DANCE
Dance accompanied ancient rituals, spiritual
gatherings and social events. As a conduit of trance,
spiritual force, pleasure, expression, performance and
interaction, dance became infused into our nature from
the earliest moments of our existence - from the
moment when first African tribes covered themselves
in war-paint to the to the spreading of music and
dance across all four corners of the world. Without a
doubt, dancing remains one of the most expressive
forms of communications that we know.
Benefits of Dance and Creative Movement

• Develops cardiovascular & muscular endurance


• Helps to keep the brain sharp.
• Decreases incidence of dementia & Alzheimer's disease, depression.
• Increase self-esteem & improve body image.
• Improves coordination, balance, flexibility, & body composition.
• Lower cardiovascular disease, BMI, resting heart rate.
• Give a sense of togetherness within a group.
• Encourages positive social interaction & interpersonal relationship in a group.

What makes a good dance?

• Form- is the instrument by which ideas and elements are


arranged or combined into a logical sequence.
• Phrase- is the smallest unit of form in the whole dance. A single
phrase consists of eight (8) counts. It is easier for building
routines and choreographic combinations with an 8-count phrase. 
• Motif-  to be able to convey its meaning or intention to the
audience.
Evaluating a Good Dance
•  "The Evaluators roles" 
•  • CHOREOGRAPHERS- they will evaluate a
part of an ongoing process of developing a
personal style that is both spontaneous and
organized.  
• • DANCERS- they will evaluate according to the
specific demands that the performance places on
them. 
• • AUDIENCES- they will evaluate according to
the particular context of the dance.
TYPES OF DANCES
Contemporary
This style of dance incorporates lyrical, modern, ballet and jazz. Contemporary
dance is all about connecting the mind and the body through dance movements.
Ballet
Ballet is often referred to as the backbone of dance. The fundamentals used in ballet
are often used throughout all other styles of dance as well. There are three main
classifications: classical ballet, neoclassical ballet and contemporary ballet.
Tap
Tap dance is probably best known for the type of
shoes the dancers wear.
Hip-hop
Hip-hop is a style of dance that evolved from hip-
hop culture and is typically danced to of course, hip
hop music. Breakdancing is the most well known
type of hip-hop dance, but other styles include
crumping, popping and locking.
Jazz
This type of dance is very fun and energetic. It is
typically paired with upbeat music such as hip-hop or
show tunes to add a theatrical flare.

Ballroom
Ballroom dances are done with a partner, almost always
a man and a woman. For this reason, it is known as the
social dance, because of the interaction between the two
dance partners.

DIFFERENCE OF FOLK DANCE AND
ETHNIC DANCE
A folk dance is a form of social dancing that
became a part of a certain customs and traditions of
people. Most folk dances were developed among
village people and were passed down by generations
to generations. An ethnic dance on the other hand is a
dance formed originating from an ethnic culture that
expresses the aesthetics of a particular Culture.
